Watched this again last night on TCM, having not seen it in several
years, and was surprised yet again with how well it holds up after 65
years. Most movies from that time do not hold up well over time, the
most unfortunate example of which is GWTW.

practicing their English is ridiculous instead of amusing. I mean, the guy has been speaking perfect English throughout the entire film, but all of a sudden he's reduced to 'vatch, vat vatch' when trying to ask the time. The use of English in this movie worked well because everyone spoke English, without phony German/French/Whatever accents, so a tone of reality was maintained throughout-except, of course, in the above-mentioned scene.
I know, a small point perhaps, but there ya' are.
As an aside, I always make of point of mentioning Helmut Dantine, the actor who played the young guy whose wife was ready to screw Renault in order to get those exit visas. Though he had a decent acting career, his greatest achievement was his anti-Nazi work in his native Austria when he was a teenager, which earned him a stint in a concentration camp. Talk about having the strength of your convictions. And he was the father of one of my best friends.

Here's some interesting trivia about the movie from IMDB
Yep, we watched it again too.
Amazing how well it holds up even after many viewings.
Claude Rains month! FINALLY!!!! He had the best lines in Casablanca
and near carries the film, which is saying a LOT!
“ Once this was all Black Plasma and Imagination. ” -Michael McClure
All the performances are wonderful. I enjoy every scene of that film.
-Wendell
Many films of this time hold quite good!
In fact it was the golden age!
Of American cinema.
You are right, there one after another enjoyable film from that time. Some dead serious, some silly, some outright side-splittingly funny.

If you didn't try to hump everybody's leg even after you've been spayed in print it wouldn't be necessary for folks to roll up their newspapers and discipline you ever time you post snobby criticisms. ;O)
Food for thought.

Sometime silence is a better way.
