families all but torn apart by an affair between two young lovers.
Raimu, though his character Cesar isn't the title character, actually has the major role and he easily carries the film, though he is given masterful help by Fanny herself, her much older would-be-suitor (Panisse), and Cesar's two friends, the Lyonnaise and the Captain (regrettably, this is a different actor and, though competent, he must fail to attain the great comedic highs of his predecessor).
These films are based on plays and they are all about lines, acting, and subtle plot shifts. Though sometimes the plot twists definitely are melodramatic, their resolution is anything but and the realism of the dialogue places the film clearly in the dramatic column. Just as easily, this film could be considered a comedy because of the number of extremely funny scenes created by the genius of Raimu and his friends, and the brilliance of Pagnol's dialogue.
I am keeping myself away from the third film, "Cesar," for awhile better to savor "Fanny." Equally, I just don't want this wonderful world of Pagnol's to come to an end.
Follow Ups:
Pagnol made a lot of films!
You should try to get them.
liked it.
Fresnay and Charvin, btw, are terrific actors; add Raimu to the mix and the Marseille trilogy can't help but be great!
A masterpiece, every one should own it.
Look at what you should see, up to 1950.
Fernandel was a good show too.
Harry Baur war great too!

I am questioning myself if he was better than Raimu.
I think not.

That would be very emotional.
We could only seat in front of three of their best, four and a half hour each and discuss.
