Straight out of the BW playbook we have a film that has NO CREDITS at the start or the end! Yer gotta love that.
Was it better than BW? What isn't better than BW? Yeah, it was better and at least had a few real frights. Unfortunately, it was plagued with a few of the 'stereotypical' characters. Micah, boyfriend, was such a 'hard-headed, smartypants' I wanted him dead in the first ten minutes. Didn't happen. Also, the plot hooks that paved the way for the climax. Did I say "climax", yeah, something BW didn't actually have.
When it was over people actually reacted unlike BW where people sat stupefied over the fact they lost 80 precious minutes of their lives.
Many of the folks in the audience were too young to remember BW, which is good as this is much better but not for the jaded viewer.

Follow Ups:
last scenes in the collapsed structure were scary as hell.
I enjoy folks who think they get macho points from saying "it didn't scare me!"
I recall a bet years ago regarding the original low budget thriller, "The Night of the Living Dead." The bet specified the guys couldn't talk or joke around, both would remain in the room, and that this would occur late at night.
We went in several times to observe them: they were scared to shit!
Now, BW may not be high art but it brought the genre back to center, away from all the dumb ass special effects, excessive gore, and "GOTCHA!" scares. BW worked on your brain which, gritsman, is why you may not have been affected. :-()
especially the ending. I was sitting in a packed house and everyone was in stunned disbelief that it was over and nothing happened. Sheeesh was the general reaction.
It was not scary.

you can man up you didn't see the film and instead are just out to win friends by joining in.
SPOILER:
For those that did view the ending, it was a chilling psychological ending with the murder of the last campers. As Hitch said, any teenager can scare you by jumping out from behind a door. It takes skill to terrify someone by making him internalize it.
That was the reaction my wife and I had when we saw it. We were angry that we had been sucked in by the hype and paid to see it. It was a total disappointment.

the BW website was masterful. I was enthralled when I saw it the first time and there was NO hint it was entirely fictional. BW was probably the most profitable movie (cost ratio) ever made in the U.S.

but (as has been noted) it sucked as a film.

It's one of the least engaging films I've ever seen. The hype surrounding BW was scarier than anything on screen. I found the whole enterprise laughable and spent most of the movie counting cliches. It's a grade "Z" turkey in the same league as other classics like ROBOT MONSTER and PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE.The crazy guy in FARGO was far scarier than anything in The BLAIR WITCH.

building all the hype. I'm really surprised there weren't riots in theaters.
