There are several excellent movies on this week, including the original
PHamtom of the Opera with Lon Cheney and one of my personal all time
favorites, Pocketful or Miracles. But check the listings for several
more good ones too.

and I remember TSHDT as being one of the grimmest movies I've ever
seen. Besides which it features Hanoi Jane, and I won't watch her
movies, even if she does remove most of her clothes in some of them
(Barbarella).
Mike
Yeah, I'd hang on to that grudge. I mean, it was only forty years ago! Hell, I'm still pissed off at the Brits for that Tea Tax-it will be a cold day in hell when you see me buying a Guinness!
Plus, it's interesting seeing you vacillate on those iron-clad mores when potential PG-rated non-nudity is involved.
Man, asylum is right.

"dammit"
Well, perhaps you do not understand everything she did. You should
rea'y readd up on her activities during that time. As far as I am concerned,
she's a traitor, of the highest order. She caused the deaths of some
of our people. Don't believe me? Look it up.
It's one thing to have opposed the war. Many people did, many people
worked hard to end the war, some fled to Canada or elsewhere to escape
military, and suchlike and so forth. I don't have any problem with
any of that. I have a BIG problem with someone whose actions cause
death of our people. And there's no reason for me to "get over it",
as you suggest. I have principles in this regard: one of them is,
you don't do what she did.
Mike
Your principles are well founded, though since then Jane Fonda has spoken openly with regret for how her actions could have caused harm.
Fouty years ago I suppose she was more concerned (or aware) of general world issues rather than immediate practical consequenses to our men serving.
Sadly, to "cause death of our people" is not unique to "Hanoi Jane" - Presidents do it all the time with seeming impunity.
VIDEODROME (1983) is David Cronenberg's surrealistic/hallucinatory spaced-out working of the "Network" theme (1976), starring James Woods, Deborah Harry, etal. (another "look what TV will do to us" piece).
Gore, brutality, S&M, snuff, corporate indifference/technolgical conspiracy - all wholesome American/Global entertainment values that "TSHDT?" merely alludes to. VIDEODROME is an offbeat must see, and although it appears dated and rough today its thesis still holds up.
(BTW: If you can stand watching Jane, "TSHDT?" put Sydney Pollack and Jane Fonda up there as big league hitters in their time - worth watching for Gig Young's fabulous Emcee, and fantastic supporting cast -imo. Oh yeah, (spoiler!) and Jane is snuffed by the end, which some might like.)
"Off-beat" describes "Videodrome" very well. The special effects are what seem dated to me. "You are what you watch" sums up the movie very well. "Long Live the New Flesh."
BTW, I just checked this Aslym out for the first time and like it. I'm usually over on Music or Speakers.
Regards,
Karl
"'Cause when love is gone, there's always justice./And when justice is gone, there's always force./And when force is gone, there's always Mom. Hi Mom!" Laurie Anderson, "O Superman (For Massenet)
...(and you watch what you are to become).
I'm an Asylum hopper too - Welcome!
