This is going to be divisive. I know that because my friend with whom I saw it found it boring and dumb, said the kids in the audience were bored (true) and compared it to our standard for bad movie choices in the recent past, which is I Heart Huckabees.
I, on the other hand, quite liked it. It's an odd one alright, more a purely visual art movie than any sort of kids movie. The main character is a kid and it is devoid of sex and violence, but it is essentially plotless. I don't imagine many kids would really like it.
It is a sort of exploration of a mental journey taken by a kid with a lot of issues. The wild things are certainly projections of various parts of himself and his life.
The journey is oblique and ambiguous. One of the aspects I like about a movie is when things are left open to interpretation, and such movies are rare. This is one of them. What happens? What do the wild things represent? Why do two stunned owls cause so much turmoil? Conventional answers are not given. I can understand why this would put off many. But I enjoy having something to chew on, having things left open.
The creatures and their land are visualized and voiced beautifully.
When the biggest plot element is a dirt clod fight, you know this is not for everyone. But for art movie types, it's a good fall release.
Follow Ups:
...and my 19 year old daughter who used to love the book as a kid.
I thought the movie was excellent and it never failed to hold my interest.
The kid who played MAx did a terrific job.
It was obvious the creatures - who were very well done - represented people and emotions Max was wrestling with.
Spoiler alert:
My writer daughter thought KW represented his mother and Carol represented some of Max's emotional responses he struggled with.
I can see why some reviewers loved it.
I never cared for the book when I was young, so I may pass.
I did like National Lampoon's satire, "Where the Weird Things Are". :-)

...next they'll make a film from Goodnight Moon.
I hope they use the one with Bush in it...
but I admit to being 'lost' during the time with the creatures. It just did not hold my attention too well.
Frankly I preferred the film before he went to the island.
The photography and music were terrific though.

...raved about it and some have called it "magical".
It's not supposed to be for young kids, though.
I'll be seeing it this weekend with my daughter at her college's fall family weekend.
It was one of her favorite books as a kid.
More raves than rants but it seems to be a love/hate kind of thing... with something so iconic that's to be expected.

he didn't set out to make a children's movie but rather a movie about childhood.
My favorite thing about it is that unlike 99.9% of movies with a child as the star/main character, the child in this always behaved and spoke like... well... a child.
I thought it was a beautifully sad movie.
