...dread. Hah! Not with blood. A litle sanguinity goes a long way for me. I don't find gore very appealing.
I don't think of myself as a horror movie fan, but if you look at the list below you'll see that's not quite true - in fact, I'm a big fan of *good* scary movies, especially ghost stories. I simply prefer my creepy flicks a bit more elegant and restrained than say...Halloween or Saw 2.
BTW: Please don't let the fact that many of these movies are available through The Criterion Collection put you off! I'm also quite happy to add a new movie to my fave list this year: Let The Right One In. Highly recommended if you haven't seen it (and I know many of you already have.)
In no particular order:
Bride Of Frankenstein
The Old Dark House
The Devil's Backbone
Eyes Without A Face
The Haunting
The Legend of Hell House
Vampyr
The Innocents
Rosemary's Baby
Freaks
Onibaba
Kwaidan
Haxan
The Wicker Man
Hour Of The Wolf
The Man Who Laughs
Cat People
Don't Look Now
Nosferatu
Woman In The Dunes
Follow Ups:
"Cabinet of Dr. Caligari?"
I'm horrified!
Is damn scary isn't it?
good pick and one of my favorite movies ever.
It's like the movie that all the Twilight Zone episodes were modeled after...
thanks

Dead Ringers
Flesh for FrankensteinThe thing that's most creepy to me about Haxan is AFAIK it's true.
Not much into the horror myself, though seem to have an awful lot of them...
Couple I see more in the humerous/thriller category are Peter Jackson's Dead Alive and The Frighteners...not too scary for me, just entertaining weirdness...I get more creeped out by Jeepers Creepers and The Devils's Rejects, say, about my limit...

Which we saw the other night was very impressive -
Nice tempo, a certain timeless quality and a moving
tale of friendship/love. Great swimming pool scene too!
A thinking person's vampire film.
I will be on the lookout for:
The Old Dark House
The Devil's Backbone
Eyes Without A Face
The Innocents
Onibaba
Kwaidan
Haxan
Hour Of The Wolf
The Man Who Laughs
Woman In The Dunes
Thanks!
