How about "The Wire", and "The Larry Sanders Show". Hopefully The Wire is available on DVD, for those who haven't seen it. I can't think of a better series, ever. Very little comedy in The Wire, though.

that's saying a lot for a perp like him. I guess it was Barksdale what made him seem good at the end. But he did a nice comic turn playing the tough guy in The Office.
All of "The Wire" is on DVD. Redid all the seasons a few months ago. Great stuff!
I just started going back through "Homicide: Life on the Streets", the precursor and inspiration for the fantastic "The Wire".
Having not seen these episodes since they were originally broadcast, I'm delighted at how well they hold up.
If you like The Wire and haven't seen "Homicide" (or haven't seen it in a long while) it's really worth watching.
A marvelous ensemble cast of interesting characters, top notch writing and brilliant directing/editing.
I'm impressed all over again.
Oooops! Someone's gonna yell at us 'cause this ain't film!

so you're safe.
"Homocide" was getting middling ratings when it was cancelled - better ratings than a couple series that were renewed. "Homocide" was the best cop show around at its time and one of the top in the history of American tv, imo.
I thought the recent "Southland" was very good. It's already gone, of course.
Darn! I really liked that one. Gritty it was...
thanks

Having been spoiled the past decade by GREAT TV shows on cable- HBO and such (Sopranos, Dexter, Weeds, Six Feet Under, The Wire, Arrested Development,et al),
I am very impressed by the quality "Homicide" offered - and still offers- from an old fashioned "Network" TV series.
It's not quite as fresh and exciting as when originally aired, but its inherent strengths remain captivating and powerful.
Never saw it but I will look for Southland on DVD, if such there is.
