I always thought he was 'one of ours', Breaker Morant notwithstanding! (Though do correct me if I'm wrong.)
I really enjoyed his work in the 70's TV series Callan and, more recently, in the (UK) national institution that is Eastenders.
He was one of the very few, obviously.
Yiou should check out Hot Fuzz.
That show was a guilty pleasure of mine. Always a fan of his - RIP...
It was an actor's show. Although the plots were formulaic episodic TV crap, his considerable talents shone though. Paired with Robert Lansing, they were really good together.
As I recall Woodward took a hiatus from the Equalizer to recuperate. Robert Mitchum filled in for him for a number of episodes as a slightly deranged former agent who needed the work and owed him favors. Woodward did come back to the series after a couple of months, but with an obviously less strenuous work schedule; the physical action scenes were toned down a little and his rogue sidekick Mickey Kostmayer (Keith Szarabajka) got a lot more screen time.I really liked that series, even as formulaic as it was on occasion (not bad for mid-80's TV by any standards). Edward Woodward's acting is what set The Equalizer apart.

It was when he had that short-lived TV series in the 80s. I was walking on 6th Ave. in midtown and he was just kind of standing there, kind of glaring at me. Turns out that when I came around the corner, I had walked right into a block they'd closed off for a shoot and they were setting up for a scene. It was a cold, snowy, sloppy day and I remember that I was surprised they were filming in such lousy weather."We must beware of those who burn with zeal but are not endowed with much sense." - Angelo Roncalli
