I watched way way back when Siskel and Ebert were on PBS. They syndicated and got very popular. A number of other movie review pairs came and went, but this one had something good. I liked Ebert more than Siskel and I didn't trust either one that much, but I enjoyed hearing their opinions and their give-and-take. And it became a nice way to find out what new movies were out each week.
So Siskel got sick, left the show, Ebert tried replacements, settled on Roeper. He was OK, pretty lightweight, but OK. In the course of time, Ebert got his own cancer, left the show and Roeper tried all sorts of replacements, ranging from very cool (Kevin Smith) to inexplicable (John Mellencamp). I don't remember who he settled on, it didn't last too long before the powers that be decided to chuck it all and get 2 young critics to appeal to the youth. Mankewicz was not bad, but Lyons was simply terrible.
So, out of the blue, in September, the 2 young hosts were scrapped and now the show has the 2 best critics in its entire history IMHO. A.O. Scott of the NY Times and Michael Phillips (Chicago Tribune?) They know their movies, they know how to write an entertaining review, their interchanges are witty and incisive, and this show has hit an unexpected peak, at a time when I actually thought it was about to disappear completely. They both liked New Moon. That doesn't mean I'm going to see it, but I won't sneer as much at those who do.
Follow Ups:
They are fine. Too bad the movies today are worse than ever. I wish there was a show like theirs that did Independent films only.

Question "Authority", the mainstream media sucks - Go Independent and hold BOTH parties accountable instead of just the other guys!
I need music to help forget the reality of today
They are well versed in film and all around good guys.
Siskel and Ebert (name order decided by a coin toss) can not be replaced. Those early years on PBS had them at each others throats and they truly did not care for each other. Many shows have tried to duplicate this but they are not good enough actors to copy the real thing.
I liked Ben and Ben (I prefer Ben Lyons to his dad Jeffrey) fine but their lack of experience really shows compared to their replacements.
thanks

...a couple of months ago I was surprised to see those two, who both filled in from time to time for Ebert with Roeper during the last year of the show.
They are head and shoulders above the two young guys, who were hardly watchable.
As good as they are, I still miss Ebert - he was the best.
Scott seems to be a pompous ass who pokes fun at Phillips and he's able to give it right back.
I understand from Ebert's site that he and Roeper are planning a return.
Aus Style!

Maybe I'll try an anonymizer later but I doubt it'll have the bandwidth.
