and it's fascinating to me that James Cameron can come across as such an egomaniacal, callous tyrant and that he can fill the movie with such hokey dialogue and characters, and use every cliche in the book and have every moment of the film be thoroughly predictable, and still create a work of such immersive beauty... that for the most part... none of the other stuff matters.

...after seeing "Avatar" excerpts playing on a big Samsung flat panel in Best Buy yesterday, I came away feeling that without the hoopla, dialog, or 3D Imax Experience that it came across like a really good Disney film the likes of which Disney could never make in a million years.
Just an impression.
(And I liked Avatar.)
I completely agree with you. I wanted to dislike this movie *while* watching it. The characters and especially the story were so predictable and unoriginal. When I walked out of the theater I thought I had seen the most amazing movie in 10 years. I guess the human mind can be fooled just as easily as ever. And don't we love it!
