Ya gotta be a toughie to make it through this one without your tear ducts going into overtime. Peter Jackson has made a leap into fantasy-reality and scored a thousand with an unusual combination of FX, story, actors, cinematography, and soundtrack.
Susie Salmon (Saoirse Ronan) is murdered at 14 and can't bring herself to crossover because she wants to see her family through the prolonged crisis of her disappearance and somehow implicate her murderer. Ronan epitomizes the essence of youth, purity, and all is good. She does it wonderfully and it all serves as a way to generate raw emotion.
The supporting cast does not let down the effort and provides a notably comic counterpoint with Susan Sarandon as the imbibing "granma" who moves in to help the family move forward. Wahlberg, Weisz, Tucci rounded out the cast with Tucci setting a new bar for creepy.
After two hours of excellent story telling I wanted to go home and squeeze the dickens out of my kids only I don't have any.

...all hated it.
Said Peter Jackson was the wrong guy to make it.
The book was apparently so much better because it was Alice Seibold's excellent writing that drove the story, not necessarily the plot.

...from the reviews I read and watched, it sounded like a major disappointment, not so bad you'd walk out.
Particularly for those who read the book.
Did you read it?
So, no, I haven't read the book.

But with a cast of such good actors...
More relevant, more touching.
