There is currently mud slide of movies promoting Russian nationalism, and I have strong distaste for them.
That, coupled with Putin and his communist scum buddies all crossing their chests in churches really makes me puke. Once again we are seeing the resurrection of that disgusting chauvinistic spirit - but if you take the film in isolation, without putting it into the context of the current events, and also the personalities involved, it might look differently.
BTW, its director, Pavel Lungin, is a very interesting man. He is the son of the perhaps most preeminent literature translator in modern Russian history (and she did a wonderful documentary on her life, which is incredibly interesting on its own), and perhaps best known for his Taksi-Blyuz movie, which I strongly recommend.

Well, by the time of your post my wife and I have already long recovered from the unpleasant feelings caused by that film... :)But since you loved it, you need to start looking for the next marvel from the same director, with the same lead actor - Tsar.
More darkness for the masses! :)
I am pretty sure I will be watching that one alone... with Beamer.

Christian parable than political.
Let's say you were a Jew and your family perished in the Holocaust... do you think you would be simply admiring the camerawork in Leni's films?
Certain works can only be truly understood in their historical and political context.
