It really is a terrible film.
Follow Ups:
Most people I talked to think it's tremendous which goes to show it makes a dent in the average person's psyche. Mission accomplished for a war film whether it was technically perfect or accurate.
I still laud Apocalypse Now as THE film that conveys the ambiance and reality of VN without being the least bit accurate or true to history. Hurt Locker works in the same way.

These were the first negative comments I'd seen on it. I thought the film worked.
Dean.
reelsmith's axiom : Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
I just thought it totally unconvincing.
It can be read as reasonably racist (!!??) which may indeed be realistic, but the main character is nonsense and simply another "maverick" who does things HIS way and to hell with everyone else.
Miraculously things don't blow up when he drags bombs around despite them blowing up whenever anyone else breathes on them.
The treatment of the psychologist as a liberal wimp was predictable and if a single person couldn't predict to the second when he was going to die... well I doubt it.
In addition to all the points you made, the shaken camera scenes were a constant reminder that a weak video was playing.
