I don't recall another film that was depressing to that degree. You almost want to reach for your gun and blow your brains out.
And I kid you not...
Available from Netflix including over the Internet instant play, this is just the ticket for tin. And I am not being smart. He likes to learn about other cultures... here is his golden chance. Lemme tell you, the depiction of dreary life in an Ukrainian town is totally, 100% realistic, down to smallest details, all too familiar and shocking to no end.
We like to sit and complain about our lives... take a look at the film, perhaps it will make you feel better about it.
The film is thick and physically challenging. So far I went through half of it. My wife, after first few minutes looked at some reviews and declared "I've had more than enough", then left the room... I was there to enjoy it all by me-self.
A warning - some images are truly XXX pornographic, so consider this before watching it with your kids and your mother-in-law.
Definitely not a film for everyone... and I am almost don't want to see the second half...
Follow Ups:
The young woman and the man played their roles with no attempts at audience ingratiation, no endearing superficial qualities. I confess to 2X my way through several scenes which went on too long and the subject matter of which was very depressing and dark.
Terrible situation at home, terrible one awaiting the immigrant seeking a better life in a 1st world developed country.
Sometimes, it is uplifting to see the misery of others and realize your situation in life isn't all that bad.
That scene was truly horrific.
Not a masterpiece, but a sobering drink for anyone who has not been exposed to less than glamorous life in some countries.
I found the depiction of Austrian realities darker than life, most of the guy's problems being the result of his refusal to fit in and lack of discipline, not the society's fault by any stretch of imagination. He had a job he didn't want to keep... well, THAT is going to create a LOT of sympathy these days.
As I mentioned before, the Ukrainian side was totally spot on. Again, darker than average, but definitely not unusual in any sense.
Let's make Patrick watch it!

well, yes, he did have problems but his problems at work were NOT self-inflicted. Remember the scene in the parking structure? He was attacked for being a foreigner, an immigrant, by skinhead-types. He also was there because his mother was married to a less-than-ideal Austrian husband whose callous, cynical abuse of his stepson made the guy's life all-but-impossible. Psychology is not to be dismissed where human beings and their lives are concerned, right?
At any rate, the life of immigrants seldom is portrayed in such realistic, stark terms. The woman I especially found moving, her fight with the Austrian worker was wrenching.
I am sorry, but I suspect all of us have gone in our lives through things as harsh, brutal, or WHOLE LOT MORE brutal, than what that guy experienced, and we still manage to do something with our lives.Being bullied by a bunch of idiots... is that really a sufficient excuse for becoming a low life? I mean - not beaten into pulp, just humiliated, drenched in beer and left with pants down... I do not think so... ditto for a less than perfect home environment. Not horrible... not abusing... not insestious... just somewhat trashy.
This is pure victimhood looking for an excuse.

"According to the police sources the two males, in their late fifties, went haywire after watching some Euro-crap movies. Netflix is facing $25B law suit as result of its liberal... some say too liberal, instant play policies."
Film at eleven.
I have added that Mr. Lazarescu to my list of "Movies to be watched alone at night".

...black humor. Did not make me depressed. After all, it does tell you right in the title what to expect.
Import/Export...I dunno.
I watched the first hour on my computer, and did not notice any humorous moments so far. It is dry-bone real... brutal with no glimpse of hope.
Loved the paramedic, she is wonderful. In fact all characters so far are extremely well acted.
The overworked doctor is great too. Like it or not, this is the reality in which many people live. I have been there... actually far worse (the Romanian hospitals are not the worst), and many scenes here ring true of the situations I have seen.

It had good moments, but overall it is more like a collection of Etudes, not a complete symphony. It is easy to stimulate the emotions by showing suffering, so they don't get a badge for that.

other hospital folks are memorable, and the suffering is leavened as in the best black comedies.
I'll see it again and see if it worsens.
The goes the hermaphrodite style.
