Finished Part One and it is superb. This beautifully illustrates how very good ensemble casting, good cinematography, and a hell-of-a-good story can make direction almost superfluous. Certainly, the helmsman isn't clumsy but he has a very direct, simple, and unaffected way of telling the story. And what a tale it is! From the opening scenes, we are thrust into a love story which has a passion few can match. The actresses are terrific looking: not an emaciated frame in view, just large boned, healthy women with large eyes, large bosoms, and large passions!
I can't wait for Parts Two and Three.
Again, thanks much.

No... thank you!
I wonder if you will agree with my sense that the movie has far more sympathy for the common folks caught between the millstones of the Revolution, than to their bolshevik oppressors... given the time it was made this sounds like high blasphemy.
How is the DVD quality?
Agree on actresses, they all are beautiful, albeit with different kind of beauty. The lead one is Jewish... not that it matters to an average American viewer, but to someone who had felt and experienced the state anti-Semitism that had special meaning - there was that almost "We showed them!" murmur among the Soviet Jews, Bystritskaya was a hero.
manage that?
Grigory is a wonderful actor as are his brothers, fellow Cossacks.
Seldom has the foolishness, the waste, and the idiocy of war been so devastatingly portrayed. I'd give your interpretation a wider scope: neither bolshie nor monarchist comes off very well. And once the cruelties of war begin, revenge and savagery must ensue.
Again, this is a 5 star film and I thank you!
The adulteress? She is a temptation, alright....
Her face is deep, there is real intelligence in it. She was full-bodied, in the best of that time's tradition. Incredibly popular, she played in very few movies, most of her work was in theater. She is apparently still alive.
