Got around to watching the remake last night. The one Ebert said was better than the original. I began to wonder about his motives. (I can see Rock's motives---$$$) The remake does not improve on the original so what's the point? Surely Ebert can see this. I wonder if he wanted to appear loyal to American cinema, was afraid to be politically incorrect by not preferring the mainly African American effort, or just what. Oh, I know, we will have Ebert detractors here ("Well what did you expect?")and there is that. Perhaps it is just different tastes in what is funny. He thought Hangover hilarious and I thought it amusing.
Maybe it is me, I have thought few things funny since Richard Pryor.
Follow Ups:
I hated the remake. Loved the original.
I will admit Ebert isn't afraid to praise a film he loves that other critics don't e.g. Dark City. That one I agree with him about - DAAF, I can't.
So it goes.
...and appreciate his viewpoint.I really liked the original British "Death at a Funeral" and cringed everytime I saw the trailer for the remake. Most of the critics I read panned it.
I hate to say this because it sounds so politically incorrect, but I wonder if the fact that Ebert's wife is Black has anything to do with his rating of this film.
There was another film he liked with Black actors I thought was terrible and a friend brought this up.
And I agree with you about the "Hangover" - it had lots of funny ideas but they were only amusing in the way they were carried out. Some of the throw-away lines were the funniest.

Ebert's wife is Black"
I didn't know that. It is interesting. I do like Roger's reviews. Uusally. I though the still photos at the end of Hangover the best part of the movie. And I liked the scenes with Mike Tyson.
Ebert always goes the extra mile.
We'll have to agree to disagree about global warming until the next global cooling scare comes along
he has given four stars to many films that were not very good - the 80's film Less Than Zero being the most obvious error on his part that comes to mind.
His writing style is so good that I read him anyway...
