Boy, be complimentary about a film and you risk getting your head handed to you on a plate around here. Anyway, this small film is about an American sub culture I know nothing about but, seems to me, that at it's heart it may be about character. The circumstances are grim and I only recognized one actor (think he was the guy who played the sheriff's side kick in No Country For Old Men). Regardless, think everybody involved can be very proud of their work.

...I've seen this year. Loved it.
Loved it, I say, and I love Daniel Woodrell, from whose novel this film is faithfully adapted.
I've got relatives that ain't too far off these folks, and they only live about 50 milers from where the movie was shot.
...after a few recommendations from friends.
It is very well done.
The young girl central character may be up for an Oscar, but overall it's a very bleak and depressing view of both humanity and a slice of rural America.
I guess that's the point.
3 out of 5 stars
I saw this at a free preview showing here in London. A depressing setting, yes, but I found the central character's quiet heroism quite inspiring, as was the actress's portrayal.
...near mythic proportions. Talk about the three fates - more like the three witches!
I found the ending bittersweet but ultimatley uplifting. I thought it was a beautiful film - to me it was absolutely riveting, especially the way the tension spiralled in the third act.
These people don't necessarily find their environment "depressing" in the way we middle class city dwellers might - which is one thing I feel the filmmakers got exactly right. They were never condescending to the folks they were portraying.
My mother's people are from an area fairly close to where the movie was shot. Some of those folks coulda been relatives...I recognized a lot in the films. They got it right IMO.
... to someone with knowledge of the setting. It certainly had an air of authenticity about it. The universality was already evident.
Definitely a writer (Daniel Woodrell), director (Debra Granik) and cast (Jennifer Lawrence et al) to keep an eye on.
The novel is widely available here and I see Woe to Live On was filmed by Ang Lee in 1999 as Ride with the Devil. Must investigate!
Hated it.
Just curious, what's to hate?
To get on the endangered species list you need to admit getting high on Lord of the Ring.

dreck also qualifies for lifetime status.
...as much as I loved Winter's Bone (loved it a LOT), I also enjoyed the 2009 Star Trek.
It's like the difference between filet and popcorn, but there's a place in my diet for both.
NNow Avatar just gave me indegestion - that was like cheese puffs, may be to other's people's taste but not mine...and too much of it is bad for you.
have voiced great pleasure in this superb gem.
