The movie was fantastic! Very realistic portrayal of sleazy and dangerous segment of society. The 70's era L.A., greasy mob-man, dirty night club...the writing and acting was excellent! One of the better mob movies, maybe my favorite along with Casino.

Back then in Detroit there were strip joints and people like that. Well then again it was filmed about then!
... grouped in an area called "the block" - strangely across the street from the Baltimore City Police headquarters. It was still "greasy" through the 90's, but today the city in trying to clean up its image, (right!), and has moved to become more "family" oriented.
I love when films accurately capture some memory of the American experience, as was achieved in "The Killing of a Chinese Bookie".
I feel that the version with added cabaret scenes so full of desperate pathos, elevates a great film, to art.

I watched this while traveling, saw it on a laptop screen but was totally engrossed in the film. Probably the most realistic depiction of the syndicate ever portrayed. The scenes on the boat where he was asking for more time/credit were chilling and exceptionally well acted. I grew up in a neighborhood with a lot of 'connected' guys, but I was too young to realize it. I recognized several characters that could have been my old neighbors, and it made me smile and shudder at the same time.
Baba-Booey to you all!
tho' Cassavetes didn't direct the film, has a similar gritty 70's gangster realism to "Chinese Bookie" ( which I also love! ) The way these 2 excellent actors bounce off each other in Mikey +Nicky makes the film a real treat
