After making a movie set in the collegial, warm world of pro wrestling, Aronofsky has veered into the world of dark blood sports that is ballet. This movie starts innocently enough. Like any other dance or sports movie, there are people putting in huge efforts in a competitive arena where only the few can win. it looks like it might just be the prototypical story of an artist's travails. Somewhere in the middle it becomes something else entirely. Suffice it to say, a woman in the audience actually screamed at one point. It becomes very tense indeed. It's kind of creaky melodrama, but boy, is it good creaky melodrama. And Natalie Portman shows as much commitment in her way as Micky Rourke did in The Wrestler.
