Classic horror/sci-fi film; suspense, shock, terror. Aliens was a shoot'em'up. In some ways almost as good; entertaining, but overall the original was easily the best overall film IMO.
I also really liked The Thing. The special effects could have been better, but it's also full of suspense... Haven't seen it for a few years now, unsure if I'd still like it as much.
Follow Ups:
I presume you mean the Carpenter remake? I love the special effects - they were all done pre-CGI and show the skill of Hollywood SPFX guys (before they were replaced by computer nerds).
Be sure to get the Blu-Ray version of The Thing. It looks fantastic, even after all these years. There's a great doco on the extras detailing how they did the special effects.
BTW, I also think Alien is far better than Aliens. Have you got the Aliens Blu-Ray box set? Again, fabulous. A gazillion hours of extras.
I do recall when I first saw it (the first few times) I thought the special effects were amazing. Saw a snip of it recently and it didn't appear as much so. But thanks to your push I think I will buy it on BlueRay. I own maybe 30 movies total, not a collector type, so that's saying something about the movie. :) I'll have to buy Alien also.
We haven't been replaced yet. Most of the key artists from John Carpenter's The Thing are still in the business doing makeup effects. Most of them are good friends of mine
Please tell them that the 'head melting off the body and turning into a spidery-thing' is the coolest SPFX I've ever seen!
Very cool.
Tell them that some guy named Grant in BC Canada really appreciates the work they did and do. :)
