Ian Holm, John Hurt, Harry Dean Stanton and Yaphet Kotto, compared to Paul Reiser and Bill Paxton in Aliens.

Aliens is fun but has annoying qualities like the space marines (or whatever they were called) were obnoxious and way overplayed and the storyline went all over the place. In comparison Alien is a concise classic story, dripping in atmosphere and tension.

That includes the star of the film; the Alien itself. The original Giger creature inspired real terror. It was almost an abstract force, whereas the 'Aliens' were basically a shooting gallery collection of pop-up disposable space roaches. The cute lit'l Face Hugger scurrying around the infirmary in "Aliens" was a bit more lively than the sushi-platter version in the first film, so that's something, at least.

  I worked on Aliens. We were given all the original molds from Alien as a reference and some of the original suit material and an original face hugger. While the designs were nothing short of extraordinary (Giger is easily one of if not the most influential non makeup effects artist in the world of makeup effects)the execution was crude to say the least. We were all pretty shocked. It had to be shot in shadows so as to not show how poorly constructed it was. Much like the ever breaking mechanical shark in Jaws. It may have been a blessing in disguise.

...in Aliens really annoyed the crap outa me - space grunts seem to feature large in Big Jim's action films...alas. They annoyed me in Avatar too.

  dozens if not hundreds are killed, endlessly repeated, and almost always having the "good guys" far better marksmen than the foes. How fearsome can an enemy be if a dozen of them shooting at something as massive as Chewie cannot hit their mark from a distance a pre-teen boy with a slingshot would prove lethal?
