The decline and fall of action film-making.
It's all so true.

Which is just the way things work.
Most years you get a few good movies, and a bunch of bad ones.
You remember the good ones.
But I would agree that there are fewer good ones nowadays.
The only explanation is you and I have VERY different value scales. Perhaps I am so soft these days that bad films pass for good ones...
I dunno... my problem is not enough time, and too many good films in the growing queue, not the quality of films.
Of course I don't know what you mean by "old" either. One can more than easily make the case that, for instance, 98% of film noir are basically B movies... and get away with it. In reality one simply has to watch them with a different eye.

One of the most horrific examples of this was the formerly working "McG" who did that absolutely horrific visual disaster "Carlie's Angels 2". I enjoyed the first Charlie's Angels, but 2 was an offense to the eyes and ears.
Modern productions try to dupe the audiences into thinking they've seen a spectacular effort, when inf act they've just endured a mess.
There are countless examples, but another is Ocean's Twelve (and I even enjoyed Eleven and Thirteen).

Today the word "action" is nearly synonymous with "total idiocy". Good action film should move slowly and then hit you hard. But video game crowd wants constant motion, and since it is them, not you or me, who pays to see that crap, this is what we all get.The real question is - do we even care? There is whole group of genre films what I don't care about and don't watch. Modern days action is one of them. One more... one less... no big deal. It is not like British theater suddenly closed! More like one junkie cheated the other one to twenty bucks.

.......plain basmatic rice, not, extra hot spicy chili.
In Thailand, they loved it with small red peppers sprinkled with basil, however, in Vietnam it has to have the extra bite of cilantro into the mix.In my case, I loved the brown variety cooked in extra amount of water to give it a fluffy feel and then I garnished it with green onions together with a half teaspoon of butter and sprinkled it with sea salt and pepper.
The taste of it is like an unconverted Uncle Ben's converted rice.
If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing well

.....but I was commenting whether spicy curry goes better with plain basmati rice or hot chili.

...I am slightly amused at the author's choosing 'Die Hard' fight scene as an example of 'good' action scene.
Better example would have been final fight scene in 'Wild Bunch'.
Also, I disagree on his criticism of 'Quantum of Solace' opening scene:
"Consider how relentless machine-gun fire, roaring engines and bursting metal dominate the opening of Marc Forster’s James Bond entry, Quantum of Solace. The scene’s dense sound effects track fills in the gaps left by its vague and hyperactive visuals."
I liked the scene, and I liked it because the scene was not simply being hyperkinetic just for the sake of it, it was trying to set the mood for the new kind of enemy 007 is set to fight. The previous 007 films have been going too 'cute', too stagnant for the villains, it was set to be a re-boot.
