  I don't exactly what you mean by "impact" outside of chess. He was the best in the world for quite a while and achieved a level only fairly recently surpassed (rating-wise). He didn't play again (other than the stupid Spassky rematch) after winning the championship and, along the way, destroyed the top players in the world in a manner never seen before. He wrote some good chess books and was fairly interested in sports as a younger man. Isn't being the best in the world good enough or do you have to be the best in the world on two things in order not to be an "idiot savant?" Is Michael Jordan an idiot savant?

  He was not autistic at all. But he was indeed a complex individual. The movie brings a lot of that to light.

  how sport can mean far more than itself. This match was a Cold War showdown with Cuba reduced to a wooden board. Many chess masterminds, throughout history, have had serious emotional issues: is it in the nature of the game, itself, wherein the loss of a mere pawn can cause anguish to a seasoned player?
  If you don't care about greatness, or about chess, fine. Others may find an examination of such a singularly brilliant human being to be fascinating, not finding him less so because he also didn't decipher the structure of DNA.

        As both were the product of that system.

        Like it or not, the system was indeed very productive and effective in that regard. Spassky was by far not the best product. In addition one might note that while it took Fischer quite an effort to beat Spassky, Karpov was able to do it in a spectacular fashion. Does that mean he was so much better than Bobby?
