I'm guessing you met my ex-wife then since those were her exact words. lol
The first two films that Basil did were better than the subsequent 12 others. A couple of the films were overt propaganda attempts. But, in all, I enjoyed them. Even if there were plenty of liberties taken.
Certainly the two Robert Downey Jr films of Holmes are not exactly true to Doyle's vision. So live and let live.
Peace

Well what shout I write back? You said it all.....I could not enjoy them because of that. And mostly about how Watson was played.
More Burlesque....Really bad.
I must admit that Watson being portrayed as the doddering older fool is kind of ridiculous. But remember the era of the films. First of all, film making was still a relatively young art. Also, many of the movies studios of the time thought of the audience as unsophisticated. The subtle character development of both Holmes and Watson in the original novels and stories is easier to do in written form. So in film, especially then, they exaggerated the contrasts between the two to highlight Sherlock Holmes' brilliant deductive skills since there is no time to fill in the back story. Also, acting in that era was much more theatrical than the more realistic acting and portrayals of today.
I'm not saying I agree with the approach, but if you understand some of the reasoning then it becomes a bit more palatable. Sort of.

Relative new Art? No.
It was just naive because it target a naive audience. A three stooge kind of...
Only the result count. And it do no stand the test of time. Well it don´t work for me.
My lost.
The new English serie is a brillant adaptation of the spirit of SH. It works.
I like the Hammer productions. Too bad the films were so bad. But atmospheric very British.
Film making has evolved 70+ years since those films were released.
Maybe we'll get the new Sherlock Holmes series on BBC America here on our side of the pond? Or possibly a DVD/Blu-Ray release of the season? Who's to say?
Hey, what can I tell you? I also liked Alfred Hitchcock's film and TV work and the original Twilight Zone.
Peace
Well Chaplin films or others are masterworks. For ever.
They already are on B-Ray! I am waiting anyday for the second series to come by Post.
I saw all the Alfred Hitc. some were really good. Not the Twilight save the Spielberg film..
I'll look for that SH series on DVD. Thanks.
I watch The Alfred Hitchcock Hour every weekday here on cable. I also watch Alfred Hitchcock Presents too. When they have a Twilight Zone marathon I watch those also.
Peace
I have all the DVD´s from Alfred.
One of my hero on Zelluloid...
Hitchcock deserves his own thread as I have also seen them all. :)
Peace
All his TV or all his films?
Both. The films for sure. And as much of the TV that has been syndicated and available.
Peace
I bet you don´t..
I'm not sure I understand.
Peace
Ok ok Have you seen Bon voyage & Aventure Malgache?
Have you seen his film on the german death camps?
I said I doubt you saw all his films...
Ok not all of the films he directed. I also don't speak French. But if they're available subtitled I'd be happy to watch them. I'd say of the almost 60 Alfred Hitchcock films he directed I've seen a large portion. I am a fan.
Peace
Are you happy? I mean now..
PS: I hope you cop with my sens of Humor..
You're British. I expect nothing less. lol
I take no offense and should have known where you were going with it. I just didn't expect you'd pull out the French Card on me.
Peace
No I am French....With love from Germany...
I'm glad I reserved my French humor. lol.
I enjoy many foreign films throughout the world. I like some of the Scandinavian movies. Korea has some good stuff. I've been surprised by efforts out of the Middle East. French films sometimes allude my grasp. Some of them seem to lack sincerity and add more artistic flair for effect. I don't mean the type of American Hollywood drivel. I mean the mood of some of the Parisian films. But that's just me.
My favorite thing out of Germany is A. Lange & Sohne. But that is a far digression...
Peace
In every County there are many Good films. But in my view the best from the best are Russians. There aare two kind of french films in my view, the one the copy of Hollywood ( bad,, ) and real good one.
Now watches? Ok: IWC....
Watches are a Pandora's Box. lol
I've owned many watches. Various brands. Vintage and modern. I never had the pleasure of owning one from IWC even though I wanted a Portuguese. The first IWC I ever had the pleasure of seeing in person was it's Grand Complication. It had just been released and helped fuel my passion for wristwatches. One that ended with having over 100 mechanical watches in my collection and having owned hundreds through the years. A passion that ended about a decade ago. I sold them all off.
Of all the watches I've ever had the fortune to own, the Omega Speedmaster Professional was my favorite. The Patek Calatrava was my second. The two complimented each other well. If I were to ever get any watches today those would be the two.
wow this thread got derailed. lol. My apologies.
Peace
The same for me. I just retain some watches, got ridden of many. One of my favourit is a Jaeger Le-Coultre Mark 11- 1948-
I love that one. And my old Rolex...and few more.
It was fun!
The Reverso duo was my JLC of choice. The IWC Mark 11 was a terrific watch. I never got to pick one up. I once had a Rolex 6694. Boy was that a PITA. The screw down crown made it a chore to wind it daily.
I could go on forever about watches.
Peace
I have also a Reverso...But the simpest model in gold, with a my Initials...My must loved would be Pasha de Cartier, with the glass back.
Now you started...
Every Reverso is a good Reverso. Brilliant watch. Alas, I don't have any watches today. None. Again, if I had to choose just one it would be the Speedy Pro. In my opinion it's one of the ten best watches ever produced. I had the 30th Anniversary. But I'd choose one with a display back.
To hear the ticking of a slow-beat mechanical watch is hypnotic. The fast-beat automatics sound great but the hand wound watches are cathartic.
Peace

Yep. As the article states, Germany can make some fine watches.
Peace
The french too...Near Switzerland they used too...
The French don't have as deep a tradition of watchmaking as the Swiss or Germans.
Peace
I think the English were the first.
But when I wrote the French near Switzerland...
Now look the list for french watches...Quite a few...
I don't understand how Breguet is French when it's headquartered and manufactured in Switzerland?
Peace
I try to tell you that the part of France who is near the Swiss are the same people the same industry they share. Look at the time of the French Kings! Magnificent. Don´t forget France was one of the great country for a long time. So where the Turks with their empire. And that for hundreds of years.
