It's hard to believe, but it was released 30 years ago in 1982. Sci Fi as a genre seemed so promising, largely unfulfilled IMO.
Follow Ups:
I feel the same way. Blade runner, Outlands, and Alien were going to be the beginnings of a great art form (it apeared to be). It just never seemed to develop and nobody continued to make good sci fi. It seems the genre was morphed into action/horror. I would think Heinlin,Bradbury,Clark etc. were disapointed too.
To me, Dune will always be the ultimate sci fi book, and no screen treatment will ever do it justice.

Yes. "Dune" is like a derivative "Lawrence of Arabia", just more so.
Dune went beyond sci fi, politics or even religion. It mastered all of those genres and went beyond them. The way the "spice" was brought into the plot as a multifaceted symbol and impacted different peoples was a stroke of genius.

Well this one did deliver! On all fronts.
Not only science fiction.
The only lethal error ( almost..hehe ) was to put a date in the entry of the film.
Would has been much better to write, something like " S-F in the future...
The rest is perfect.
Since it is nearly impossible and potentially hazardous to send men on a space trip for many light years, sending robots to collect information seems like an eventuality technically. These robots will become so advanced that they will replace astronauts eventually.
The monolith was a robotic scientist collecting information on Earth. If the people wanted to see it as some god then fine.

Too bad the final result was that way...with some work on the script it could have been a lot better.
'Contact' went a bit far with wormholes. That's merely in the theoretical realm. If Sagan didn't go on that wormhole trip he would have had to go on to a different story. For instance the message in the signals could have the plans for a fusion reactor, but that would not be as fun.
Contact? you mean that merde a la Hollywood with the worst actress of the last ten years( Before she could manage to do some thing..)
Can that be?
Hmmm...yes J.F. is a stiff actress. Now I know why her 'love scenes' seemed a bit fake.
