... star presence with a capital "S", utter authenticity even when going overboard (The Shack in "Emperor of the North Pole" comes to mind), and the widest range of most any actor (save Peter Sellers).
His technique was so unassuming that any role could be within his reach. I feel he was very underused and terribly under-rated (like Charles Bronson). Not only one fine character actor, but a cool guy as well - and a long career.
Mystique, sensitivity, honesty - hallmarks of a legendary performer.

and then he was a guest of Robert Osborne on TCM in the last coupla years and I realized he was
NOT only one helluva actor (though maybe not so adept at picking great vehicles to work
in), but a very cool person as well.
Seems like he had a long, rich life. RIP.
