from the Rotten Tomatoes website:
Based on the 2009 investigative book by BBC correspondent Martin Sixsmith, The Lost Child of Philomena Lee, PHILOMENA focuses on the efforts of Philomena Lee (Dench), mother to a boy conceived out of wedlock - something her Irish-Catholic community didn't have the highest opinion of - and given away for adoption in the United States.
Judi Dench gives this simple woman resonance, Steve Coogan curbs his smarmy cynical side and is useful to Philomena. The story goes in a different direction than you may guess and is handled nicely.
To call this film a gem is not quite enough.
and to think I almost went to Anchorman II!
go and enjoy

there is an old movie formula where 2 partners with huge differences are paired, and this seemed a bit formulaic in that way.
In this case, the crusty cynical reporter and the deeply innocent mother.
I don't mean to complain too much, I did enjoy it and did not know where the story would go and indeed the performances are good.
It's just that I saw Nebraska just the day before and that was IMO much better, emotional yet without the somewhat button pushing emotionality of Philomena.
all.
I mean it just wasn't necessarily a "formula" but real life (which is a formula also).
and so very nice
maybe I am just a Judi Dench fan...
;^)
...just from the commercials it would seem Phlilomena and Nebraska should be combined.
Dern and Dench would make a beautiful couple and both films could have a happy ending...
he is a bit of an ass but her still waters run deep...
