Follow Ups:
After this first aired, I wrote about it (it's just down the page). Five episodes in, I'm still loving it.
Indeed, there is a lot of analysis of this show now. There are some depths to it beyond the story itself. It turns out that "The King in Yellow," published in 1895, influenced writers like Lovecraft. And it is directly referenced in this show. What it all means is not yet clear, and maybe will be left to the viewers' interpretations. At any rate, it's been a good ride.
When a cop drives over to a person of interest's house, going down the street we see bateaus poorly loaded onto their trailers in weed covered front yards. Yea, that's how it is down there.
Mrs. Nasty and I both commented on that after Epi 1. Get this old commie, it gets better.

This quote also captures a lot of truth too:Rustin Cohle: People out here, it's like they don't even know the outside world exists. Might as well be living on the fucking Moon.

Yep, never seen anything quite like it on TV and the writing and acting rivals of the best of film. It's shockingly good. Dunno how it could be better. Grim, tho. Very grim.
Granted, HBO has the advantage of 8 one-hour episodes to develop plot and character, but Hollywood would have turned this into just another lame cop buddy movie.
