"Cargo," helmed by the tragically dead-way-too-young Balabanov, is the horrifying tale of a young man who takes his squeeze to buy some hooch at a remote farm house. No, it's not so easy as a Hollywood writer would imagine. Rather, this complex tale throws together a sycophantic Vietnamese farmhand, a high-ranking military officer, a local police boss, and a professor of philosophy in an unrelentingly and increasingly terrifying descent into hell.
"My Joy" traces the fearsome consequences experienced by a do-gooder truck driver who sets out to help a young teen prostitute he casually encounters.
There is nothing like this in American film. Period. The level of realism, the directorial and writing skills leave the viewer no respite: yes, these are experiences realistic enough to seriously creep you out.
Follow Ups:
"Cargo" is based on actual events recorded on that one day all strung together in a horrifying tale. Loved it.Same for "My Joy" which showed a very ugly side to the modern, liberated Russia. No good deed goes unpunished.
Both are worth seeing but one must be prepared for the "Eastern Bloc Grind" in the way the stories unfold.
I'd like to see them again only no NF disks for me any longer.
PS. I missed the JOY in 'My Joy'. It must have been ultra fleeting.
