As you might recall, I did not like The White Ribbon... and in general I respond with coldness to cold German films... many are good, none is excellent, I think. Unless I am forgetting something...

How about Come and See? The Ascent? The Sacrifice?
I'll post a list of warmer German films, later...
I am talking about different kind of coldness, which is very alien to the typical Russian character. It is that icy purely Germanic coldness that I dislike. Strangely, I don't feel it in the Swedish, Norwegian or Dutch films. I think what you see in some of those Russian films is darkness, which is whole another story. It is absolutely a part of a Russian soul.

Herzog.
I remember it quite well, and watching it is painful for me, as it is very close to real life - the people, the apartments, the roads, the town, the teenage prostitutes on highways. At the same time, it all looks and feels so alien... sort of like one huge Stalker's Zona.

Someone on a Russian forum strongly recommended this film, maybe you could find it.

Just for grins I entered the title into the Amazon search window, and got this:The title line is from the plot description. Sounds like a must-see movie.

Excellent film, better than the Return, very dark and very human.
