trumps the performance. That's my take on it. I know actor's want to stretch, but when you develop a screen personality over decades, it just seems too phony suddenly to try and alter it. Robin Williams as a psychopath late in his career comes to mind�
See "Homesman" or "Citizenfour" instead.
