A number of historians have complained that the film inaccurately portrays LBJ of foot-dragging on civil rights when, in actuality, Johnson was very sympathetic to Dr.King and his agenda.
Follow Ups:
...it's a film, not a documentary.
LBJ is one small part of the film and is said to be the least interesting character in it.
From what I've read it is an excellent film, realistically portraying the era and showing King as a smart, political, human being.
And its a movie, so doubtless there will be liberties taken.
OK, pretend I didn't say that.
It's more than one hair out of place. It's the leader of the civil rights movement and the President of the United States. Rather important, I'd say.
How many people are going to come away from this movie thinking Johnson was "on the wrong side" when in reality he did the right thing. Johnson said privately that by supporting civil rights legislation, the Democrats would lose the South for generations. But he did it.
The movie portrayed LBJ as bit cautious for MLK's taste - who didn't want to lose the momentum. Despite the snub by the AA it will become a Classic.
“Somebody was always controlling who got a chance and who didn’t. - Charles Bukowski
