I recently watched the entire 7 year run of the West Wing - I missed this when it was on TV as I was going through university at the time.
The show is based on a democratic president and White House but from my readings of it it was popular with real white house staffers at the time.
In the series, they seemed to be fairly balanced with Republican representation and viewpoints in several key characters in season 2 (Ainsley Hayes) and season 7 (Arnold Vinnick).
My question to people who saw a significant portion or all of this series whether Republicans like the above are realistic. As a lefty Canadian darn I'd marry Ainsley - and would strongly consider voting for a politician regardless of party like Vinnick.
So where are these Republicans - do they exist or is it just wishful thinking liberalized saccharine versions of the party?
Follow Ups:
I watched it with my mom once and she call it "the walking fast and talking show" she was in her 80's at the time. I enjoyed the show but I don't remember many of the characters, it was so long ago, but there was a time in this country when people of opposite parties could agree and work together, those day are gone for now.

Enjoyed it very much, especially Toby and the Jimmy Smits characters. I wouldn't read more into it than a well-written, supremely acted series.
.
I enjoyed it - and Toby was my favorite. I like his morose nature. Indeed, it was one of the few shows where I enjoyed all the characters.
