Just saw it on cable TV. (HD)Good all the way through, I thought.
A tale of betrayal and revenge, but with lots and lots of heart.Jolie is good here...and in some scenes she is great.
Special effects are superb.
Recommended.

... "Maleficent".The underlying theme: Womankind's revenge against the world of men. Why, oh why? Because men have the power that women yearn for. Because men can do what women wish they could do.
And so, we have yet another "Woman must save the World" movie. Females are, of course, these essentially pure and nurturing creatures. If they ever seem to be doing evil, it is only an illusion. Ruthless and powerful men give them no other choice.
Some nice special effects thrown in for good measure. 1-1/2 stars.

----------------You read that into it because that is what you are inclined to see. I suspect you would also read a similar 'not-so underlying theme' into the original 1959 Disney animated film "Sleeping Beauty". Except that maleficent is a resentful woman intent on extracting revenge by victimizing the daughter of a powerful man whom she resents. Read into it what you will.
The revenge motives and measures are essentially the same in both films but with a difference; In Maleficent (the film) the main protagonist -is- Maleficent. In SB the protagonist is the young woman who has been victimized by Maleficents' wrath. Two very different points of view.
Turn the page into today's reality in western society. (2015 real life)
We now live in a society where women are increasingly taking on leading roles in business. Particularly large corporate businesses. Perhaps in this current environment it would seem likely that some men are going to feel some resentment after having been exposed to ambitious and agressive professional women who show just as much ruthlessness in their upward climb toward personal success as have men. Some men are going to be displaced by these ambitious and aggressive women professionals. All I have to say is "look out and watch your six". The world has become more complex than it was recently.-Steve

It's there.
this is a Disney film about a Fairy Tale. So,yes, it is for children.
I'm tempted to say that it could be thought of as the mirror image of the original Disney animated film: "Sleeping Beauty". But I'd have to sit through that one to confirm it. But having watched any number of Disney animated movies from that period in the 40's and 50's, it has become apparent that Disney tended to tell tales of good versus evil. Evil is ugly. Good is beautiful. And often enough in those Disney movies, the evil witch dies horribly as the audience applauds. And these are shown to children. (message to young children; ugly is evil...kill it.)
Anyway, Maleficent, the movie, shows all the shades of human emotion from bright and sunny to dark and hateful. Betrayal and revenge, then forgiveness, contriteness ,a test of the soul, and then redemption. And it does so with appropriate justification to motivate each condition.
Imho, it is probably better to show children this version of the Sleeping Beauty tale than the original from 1959.

I heard it was a big 'women are victims, all men are evil' re-telling of the story.

..
found nothing of interest lest of all, Lard Lips.
I mean, it's not for everybody just kids. Jolie made a ton of money off it and it will be a perennial film for all little kiddies to see.
That probably explains why rlw liked it so much.
I'm only joking. :-)
I resemble that remark!! [g] It's all good, Geoffie....

As mentioned, the special FX were great and Jolie is *perfect* for the role. No one does an evil, wicked laugh with arched eyebrow better. I've watched this movie several times and will probably re-visit it again in the next few months...
