and The Rock. This is a very politically correct casting project that made sure any woman who has three lines comes well equipped with ample chest and pogo stick brassieres.
You will chuckle at all the cliches, as I did, but that's part of the fun. The CGI kicks right off with a classic lesson on texting while driving and rapidly progresses to the Hoover Dam. Giamatti is the brains of the film who figures out how to predict quakes about 20 minutes too late. Panjabi, a reporter, hangs with him and brings up the question of "future romance".
Dwayne is in the midst of a divorce from Gugino who is moving in with a billionaire type. But, that crushed marriage is about to change thanks to the greatest natural disaster that has occurred.
The Rock flies a rescue Huey for a fire department. When the quakes hit he boldly diverts himself to save his wife and daughter. That's where all the fun is.
The CGI eclipses the actors except when they are running. This is a shrewdly entertaining film with all the politically correct things mashed into it. This is not for the Dom and monocle crowd. Leave that stuff behind. You should GO BIG because this won't be anything at home. Children will love it and their chaperones amused by cliches and puppies fighting under blankets.

and what a surprise the daughter lived!
gasp!
LOL
...she has too much talent to die!
Since you already used the spoiler - it was funny that she was dead for about 5 minutes+ and then wakes up not brain damaged - but anyway.
This was one of the best disaster movies that I have seen - even though towards the end it gets absurd. With all the rubbish in the water - the motor boat engine was impressive I must say. It must have been made by Bentley or something cause that thing can cut through anything apparently.
Paul Giamatti manages to bring something to the table with very little as well so that was nice.
I can't believe I am saying this but it entertained.
You absolutely must leave your brain at the door because this movie has so many faults in it :) that it creates its own earthquakes.
But as these disaster movies go it was probably the best of the lot (which sure isn't saying much). But at least here they don't spend an hour and half of blather waiting until the very end to do the quakes. They moved the action along pretty much from the start middle and end - with walking dead quality dialog (argh) in short enough doses not to bore the hell out of you and boom - another quake. The Rock came ready to rumble in this one and didn't crack in the close-up "I have to act" parts.
6/10
I will pass on this one...
...the plot and writing really sucked. But the special effects were amazing and spectacular, particularly since I live in the SF Bay Area.
And the young female star is very talented, if you know what I mean.
If you're going to see it, it needs a big screen and 3D.

for some odd reason I'm tempted to put all disaster movies in the same category as Sharknado. But with Sharknado getting a better review because it has the appropriate attitude.

That's the title. Be ready. It's coming for you.
And yes, by God -- Tara returns!
...nothing compares to Sharknado.
Special effects were a lot of fun.
On a related note, my God they show a LOT of previews at the theater these days.

...the effects are the star of the film.
The Rock is along for the ride and doesn't take it too seriously.
...and highly entertaining. Johnson's acting was much better than I expected--and quite good--and the rest of the cast members were convincing. Special effects were high in quality and the story was good enough. It looked great on a 70X30-foot Panavision screen and sounded fabulous (if a bit too loud) with Dolby Atmos.
HIGHLY recommended for a summer popcorn movie. Probably I'll see it again.
I've walked out of probably two-dozen turds; this is NOT one of them.

I like Sci-Fi but ALL disaster movies full of special effects and loud noise are a total waste of time as I see it.

...in today's special effects/CGI.
I am sure it is. My point is it is a state of the art turd. Disaster movies have been and always will be a waste of time to me. Everyone here knows I like little of what Hollywood has to offer. When special effects are what a particular movie is known for it almost always has substandard everything else.

Taken for what it is, its great. The computer is the star. CA-based seismic geologists had a hoot over it. I imagine structural engineers would to, but all I've known had android senses of humor. They would laugh if they got it.
I'm a civil engineer, so I get my fun from the structural types. And the electricals.
The falling buildings don't speak well for CA-licensed structural engineers. The state requires massive additional studying and testing. Design and construction standards for break-and-fail are such that it would take a meteor hit to bring one down. I guess a Richter 9.6 exceeds.
I did work for FEMA in post-Loma Prieta days (7.6 to 8.0, depending on who asked) assessing structural damage, and although buildings in the San Fran/Santa Cruz region did the shimmy, they stayed up just fine.
That last disaster flick with John Cusac had buildings falling over VERY slowly...
