for another mind numbing run through the jungle. Place looks the same, the lizards are bigger, and the cast runs dead flat--out of gas. D'Onfrio is about the only one that had a spark lit. Everyone else was in a phone booth desperately searching for enough quarters to recite their lines. Poor Bryce Dallas Howard was so shellac-ed with makeup she could hardly talk. Pratt was flat along with most of the cast. But, the lizards were there and that is the what's what of the whole sheebang.
Wow, I'm Mr Negative here lately. This movie is EXACTLY what you expect to get with a slight disappointment in the acting department. You've seen this movie before and if you have to take the kids you'll like it. Otherwise, you might want visit you mother-in-law or schedule a root canal.
This movie could have almost been a film but somebody decided to cut the budget or skip rewrites. It was missing something--the spark the first one had. It needed Goldblum.
Follow Ups:
Nothing better to do. I did a quick google search of showtimes in my zip to see what was showing. Nothing much of interest so I opted for the devil I thought I knew, Jurassic World. IMAX 3D.Going in I had certain expectations from the film. They were all met.
Perhaps this movie took a turn for the serious. Much innocent human blood was shed. This type of action had my concern as much as it had my attention. It was more than I expected.Excellent CGI. The creatures are as well developed as this series has seen so far. I expected that the technique and talent that went into that first ground breaking movie in 1992 would have improved over the years with advances in hardware, software and developing artistic talent. It has. No disappointments there. These guys really know how to draw a dinosaur.
The 3D was good, although I don't seem to have any memory of having a velociraptor jump in my lap. Still, the IMAX experience is very very good. Quite the visual spectacle. Sometimes I go in just for that.
The designated blond/red head running away from dino's in her high heels did amazingly well in spite of the obvious handicap. And showed a little growth in character throughout her ordeal.
No lawyers were eaten afaik. But one war-mongering soldier of fortune type, under employ of the evil INGEN corp, was. Justice was served by a single velociraptor....and not all that quickly. Chomp, crunch. There goes the right forearm. Sudden screams. Camera rotates away as much blood is seen to splatter on the walls amidst more chomping and crunching noises. And the screams. The screams seemed real. Not an approximation. Realistic.
I was a little disappointed to see the treatment dealt out to actress Katie McGrath (Zora) by some rather vicious pteradactyls. At first it looked like she might escape, but no. This movie served up plenty of cruelty along with its action sequences.
All in all, I was not disappointed. The movie delivered what I was looking for, A momentary escape from reality. The 70mm IMAX venue is a real keeper.

Laughing...
This movie will make a billion bucks. It's an entertaining thriller with a good cast and LOTS OF BIG DINOSAUR ACTION.

No reflection on you personally nor an attack on you. I thought the review fair and even handed, I've just had my fill of most of what Hollywood releases in the last decades.

I live in a rather small metro area (375K) and we get mostly the Hollywood money makers and almost zero indie or foreign.
It's always fun to skewer Hollywood remakes...which is all we have.
what a waste of bandwidth- when will you learn not to bother to watch this crap?

The original is considered one by many, many film goers who loved it well enough to support the seemingly endless spawn it produced. Many of the target generation of the original are now adults whose kids are the perfect age to experience this latest endevourer, and are probably THRILLED to take the family to share that experience with them. That aspect is cool with me, I hope people enjoy it.
These films aren't something I particularly care for, but I will watch it on BR when released.
It's just Hollywood junk food, but at least not just another remake of Spiderman, Batman or Buttman, et al. THAT'S where Hollywood has truly failed us.
Billy bites the bullet for many here, he's brave and... hardy. I always appreciate his reviews, even when the fodder is so obviously such.

I guess I'm turning into a grumpy old man.......but I actually ran a video store for 4 years in the early 80's when VCR's got hot. I love good film. In the last 20 years I've learned to despise ANYTHING the mass media machine tries to ram down my throat. That certainly includes Hollywood blockbusters (among other things) which as I see it are almost never worth watching much less even good.

What are you going to the movies for though? Many people don't want to go to a movie to get a dose of real life problems, or history lessons, or to watch someone's inner turmoil. What they go for is to release their brain for 2 hours in the world of candy land.
I usually find the folks who junk all of Hollywood tend to think they're above everyone else in taste or class - well I have an English Lit degree so I have seen the heightened self importance of readers abound. Everyone else is stupid because they like Rock/Pop/Jazz etc music - if they had any taste they would only like Classical music and only like 4 pianists in the history of piano playing and Piano is a superior instrument to all other instruments. And anything written after 1700 is complete trash. Yes there are these people.
The same with movies - the fact that something is in color and is in the English language automatically means it can't be rated higher than a B.
Movies like plays can be summed up in a manner to Aristotle's outline of importance: Plot, Character, Theme, Language, Rhythm, and Spectacle
What is interesting is the the artsy types typically accuse the mainstream of being suckers for spectacle - big loud special effects - although they themselves focus a LOT (indeed most) of their attention on cinematography and various oohs and aahs of camera angles and lighting. But this too is pure spectacle - the lowest form (least important) aspect of theater and by modern times film.
...and as you imply/state, less than coincidental parallels to the "popular" vs "audiophile/artsy" mentality as regards music. Neither is surprising considering our location at the moment. Goes with the territory.
Grumpy Old Men, now THAT was a pretty bad movie.
Hell, you KNOW I leave some grumpy-ass posts and be the grumpus amongst us!
I just had a moment of... clarlty... where that made-to-be-a-blockbuster
didn't annoy me as much as they usually do!

To be fair you have to somewhat consider the target market and the intent of the movie and base it "within" the genre.
Jurassic Park isn't a "film" - it's target audience is 11 year old kids and the 11 year old kid residing in adults I suppose. It's a special effects roller coaster movie and within that genre it's not terrible - it's not particularly good either - but a solid 5/10.
My frustration with these movies is that it COULD be so much better given the huge amounts of money they throw at them. Jaws worked because it was more character driven and they didn't need to show the shark every second. And the three lead characters were good actors and somewhat rounded and plausible (they weren't brain dead).
With this JP movie - there is no character to hang your hat on and it's basically - "people running away from dinosaurs" for much of the movie. Jaws wasn't completely predictable as one lead you think dies and another does die. In JP you pretty much know who is and who isn't getting chomped from the start. One dimensional characters, more dopey kids used to increase tension.
I don't think any of the JP movies are particularly great - the first movie also had dumb parts throughout. I wished they had "spared some expense" for better writing.
The premise behind these movies IMO is really good - the execution has been mediocre because they don't have the proper target market - trying to play to kids and adults is the wrong way to do it - you wind up with dopey characters and lack of big time scares. Not the dopey "I just survived getting mauled to death by a T-Rex and the next scene the kid is patting a dinosaur on the head as it sneezes on her - oh how cute is that. Piffle. And that was the first "supposedly great" first one.
Agreed with most of your post. I don't see a need to discuss it or any other of that genre here. It will happen anyway and I will likely always criticize these types of films. I remember how much better Hollywood was even just a few decades ago?

And I suppose that's the point of these movies - watching some dinosaurs thump around and chase people.SPOILER
I was so hoping the red head would get munched given that she was so annoying. What the lead guy (see already forgot his name this movie was so memorable) saw in this woman is beyond me. I'd rather kiss the dinosaur.
I didn't hate it probably because my expectations were so low that even this didn't live down to them.
Between this high budget film and last week's San Andreas - I find it funny that the third movie I watched with a TV Movie budget and is indeed a TV movie is vastly superior and probably a movie I'd watch.
Än Adventure in Space and Time"
Starring David Bradly and Brian Cox
"In 1963 Sydney Newman, progressive head of BBC TV's drama department, wants to fill a Saturday tea-time slot with a show with youth appeal and hits on the idea of an august figure, like a doctor, leading a group of companions on time travel adventures. He engages inexperienced young producer Verity Lambert to expand the idea. Fighting sexist and racial bigotry Verity and young Indian director Waris Hussein persuade crusty character actor William Hartnell to play the doctor figure and, despite technical hiccups and competition with coverage of the Kennedy assassination, the first episode of 'Doctor Who' is born. As the show becomes a success Hartnell displays an obsession with his character but, after three years, ill health catches up with him and he starts to forget lines."I wish I could have went back in time and skipped Jurassic and just watched the above film twice instead.

...box office receipts.

...like being on a ride at a themepark.
Little dialog or characters to get in the way of the action.
Few unintentional laughs.
The dinosaurs are terrific...as far as they go.
Enjoyable, but quickly forgotten.
Better than San Andreas...but not much.
For me, I sort of lean towards Alexander Hamilton's "'The People' is a beast" sentiment. ;-)
...nope, lowest common denominator.
Just sayin...
But I was in line to see Jaws in LA, the first summer blockbuster, released in June, 1975.
...reviewer said the dinosaurs have improved immensely in 22 years and are the stars of the show. The cast is secondary and not as interesting.
Tho original is the best because of the sense of wonder of seeing the dinosaurs for the first time and some scenes that stick with you - the car being crushed, the kids hiding in the kitchen, for example.
This one doesn't hold up but is the best sequel.
Howard running from the dinos in her high heels?
And the story has been said to be a parable about Hollywood movies - the customers want bigger and more exciting effects at the expense of the quality.
Going to see it tomorrow in 3D.

...similar to the military guy in Avatar.
And the same fate...
which is what I paid for
it is just too bad they can not have excellent writing and CGI dinos
that would be something
..
I think a romp through Wall Street would be appropriate and then onwards, to Washington D.C. for some Congress-Critters!
But the special effects people told him it had to stay in the movie.... 'it's tradition', they said.

that there is somehow justice in the world.
the tradition works.
Make a despicable character prominent early on so you can allow the events of the film execute him in a way that satisfies the audiences' hunger for bloodshed.
In today's so called civilized world, we're not really that different from the crowds at a Roman gladiator event in ancient times.

Having a big supply of despicable characters for the Raptors to eat.
It's a stupid movie but I'll watch it just for the scene of the Raptor tails moving through the tall grass and picking off the bad guys one by one. Great scene.

Not surprised...I like Howard and Pratt both...was HOPING they would bring spark, wit and some clever banter to this creature feature...
Oh well...it was between this or Love and Mercy today...looks like L&M...
thanks BW
Mark
...has been getting great reviews and is a must-see if you are a fan of the music.
You sure put a lot of trust in 'some guy on the internet'.
If you were looking forward to it why not go see it and decide for yourself?
It's getting generally good reviews except for the 'I'm an adult, I'm too mature for silly hollywood blockbuster movies' retards.

First...I am most likely going to see it...
Second...My sister and I were deciding between movies...this and Love and Mercy...we opted for the beach boys...great flick by the way...
Third...I will let the POTUS some it up for me...just add Go and yourself...
Thank you for your insightful judgmental prose...

Ps. BW, (that guy on the internet), sees more movies than all of us combined...I DO trust his taste in movies...we have very similar likes in the movie department...
