and all the off-beat, intensive roles he's been taking. Don't need him turning into Depp with all the fringe crazy.
This film was better than the reviews in my humble opinion. It had a lot of depth, grit, and grief, which splattered all over you. You can't help but think 50cent (with his perpetual hat) is Don King and that Billy is a de-fanged Mike Tyson.
At the top of his game and (and crossing over to the downside) he narrowly defeats his opponent to retain his belt. But, a brash, hard charging fighter taunts him about a match. It happens again and Billy (typically) loses his cool and the ensuing scuffle causes a life to be lost.
Billy is suspended for a year and loses everything. The mansion, the Bentley, the Maserati, and his daughter to child services. The story now shows us his struggle to regain her love and custody while becoming a "new person". Ultimately, Whittaker agrees to train him and 50cent (who has changed horses in the middle of the stream) arranges a comeback fight between him and the now brash champion who caused all the trouble.
Jake is intense, McAdams loving but lightweight, Whittaker very good, and the supporters do nicely, even 50cent.
This is a very grim look at a very dirty world and how it treats the mercurial superstars that pass through it. The language and violence won't be for most but it is a necessary part of illustrating Billy's world.
I give it 3 outta 5 but you may not. Maybe a cable view to be safe.

...guess I don't need to see it.
plus BW always gives a synopsis so if I do not want to find out I do not read his stuff first
my two cents...
SELF spoiling. We just watch to see if there is a credible and entertaining new slant on the story. Sorry, if I did ruin it for you. I'll arrange a special viewing of 'Minions" for you.
...most reviewers have said - this one is a story that we've heard many times before about the mighty falling and then finding redemption - in boxing like the original Rocky - but here Gyllenhall's performance takes it above and beyond the ordinary.
You went way to far - timeout for you.
you go to see how they are executed and if it is different and interesting. You aren't going to find a lot of American film that isn't designed to make money and that means: You've seen it before. There is nothing new under the Hollywood sun.
Laughing...
