I have read some reviews that are positive relating to its originality and the way the film was shot. It is a sci-fi movie shot like a documentary, kind of like you are the cameraman with a limited, up-close vantage point.
It is gross, depicting sickly, base people. But is it awesome just on how well that was done. It is original and supremely executed. TOMATOMETER is 96% really just on that.
What at least some reviewers didn't do was investigate the plot deep enough to understand the individual scenes. The movie only gives only cues and a little narration but I had to look up the book to figure out myself what was going on. It sounds ridiculous upfront, but I was rewarded. Best movie I have seen this decade, but I tend to like Russian stuff (Leviathan is really (but not as) good.
Follow Ups:
Personally, I think it is one monumental pile of shit, based on a rather simple philosophical premise, that could be expressed in one sentence.
Decadent? Degenerative is more like it. But fairly accurately depicts the modern Russian life. You can even say realism pushed all the way, with a pitch fork, up against the wall.
Not a movie for my wife, but I am curious, so - thank you!
What should we recommend for the Czarina? French farce or Gulag comedy?
Awful, awful... I am not saying "trash" simply because I have not yet finished that 3 hour long monstrosity, so who knows, maybe there is a revelation at the end?I doubt it... it shows the work of the dark Russian mind. If you thought Island was dark, think again - you ain't seen nothing yet. If you enjoy drowning someone in the crapper - this might be your movie.
Based on a cult work of cult brothers-writers, popular among the quasi-intellectuals, this is your sanitation truck sludge Stalker.
