A dark, bleak, slow burn, suspense thriller told in the style of Zero Dark 30 that had me on the edge of my seat from the get go.
Altho Emily Blunt has been getting the accolades, it's Josh Brolin, as the smug arrogant "operator" and, even moreso, Benicio Del Toro as the secretive man from across the border, who punched all the right Roadie buttons. Victor Garber is excellent as well in his supporting role (as usual). Might as well give Del Toro the Supporting Actor Oscar now.
The film's suspense builds from the opening scene, smolders, and catches fire in the final act with a pretty freekin cool, short but sweet, shootout somewhere in between for the Expendables fans. Contrary to the impression I got from the trailer t'aint no non stop shoot em up. I liked Everest (8 of 10) but this one (9) is a notch above....enjoy!!

Follow Ups:
this is one of the few films that I would be willing to see...
Just saw it a couple of days ago--fine movie, great cinematograohy by Roger Deakins, well-acted.
However, going to this movie reminded me of why I wait until I can watch a movie at home: My ears were ringing within minutes after the PREVIEW started. There were only 5 people in the theater (midweek night). The dB meter on my phone was topping out witrh many 95 dB peaks. I asked the manager to turn it down, and then it was tolerable, with actually decent reproduction.
...bet Del Toro and Blunt get nominations.
There was a heavy undercurrent of political motive in this film. The very end said it all. "Have pity on the undocumented, look at the hell they live in!"
I felt like I was watching 'Traffic 2" (another Del Toro hit). Same style, same subject. Blunt took a pounding for the team and Brolin was an experienced team leader--acting like a surgeon.
Great film, really liked it.

The Emily Blunt character is almost completely irrelevant to teh story.
She spends most of the film looking as if she's just wet herslf an when her partner takes her to the bar where she picks up the guy who turns out to b e a bent cop, no suspicion falls on HER PARTNER.
The film isn't as well done as some people reckon... in my opinion.
Nicely shot though.
...Emily is the film's conscience.
...
.
She was the best thing in 'Edge of Tomorrow' movie where she kept killing Cruise so he could come back better trained. She was really starting to enjoy it.
but this one worked.

...I even liked his performance in "Going Clear".
And for a 53 yr old, he did an amazing job in the latest Mission Impossible.
...for bringing a film topic back and reviewing it.
It's on my short list but The Martian opens this weekend and I have to see it since I read the book.
...pic and as social commentary on the methods and relative success of that war. Blunt is EXCELLENT as the 'door-kicker' from the FBI, as are Brolin and Del Toro. It's filmed very well, too, in a sort-of-realistic manner. The blow-up at the FBI-hostage-rescue house in Chandler, AZ finishes rather surprisingly--and loudly. :-)
Highly recommended.
FWIW its audio uses Dolby Atmos, the best-sounding movie system I've ever heard.
