Hitchcock's "obsessed detective" movie (and his movies in general) tends to focus on the hard elemental, rather than the diffuse emotional, aspects of society or human nature. Both movies have many good things going for them, even though one movie features a "cool" aesthetic while the other features a "warm" one.I prefer Hitchcock's style of cinematography and sense of "romance" most of the time, but that's just me.
In the art of painting I am reminded of "Poussin vs. Rubens", or possibly "Caravaggio vs. Correggio". And maybe even "Ingres vs. Delacroix".
Loads of fun, either way...
