Do you like blood everywhere and your clothes either soaking wet or frozen with snow? How about all your protein eaten tartare? Maybe a little foreplay with a Grisly? If that's your bent I do have a movie for you.
I would like to say this is a beautiful movie except for the fact nothing of beauty ever seems to fill the screen. The players are filthy and the sky is bleak although some of the locations are striking. I often had to remind myself this wasn't a black and white film.
DiCaprio had one emotion to convey: agony. He did this pretty well as he recovered and struggled to survive being left for dead. Tom Hardy wins the prize not for suffering but being a genuinely evil man. He is the type of guy that instantly makes you feel uncomfortable despite folksy friendliness. Domhnall Gleeson (almost on the A-Tier) was straightforward as a good, balanced company man who ran afoul of Hardy as the story progresses.
The historical look at Native Americans was interesting but surprisingly non sympathetic. Not a lot of nobility in their actions against the white invaders whether French or English. They seemed to be born to always settle the score.
There is so much going on it's hard to catch a break. Violent action that brutalizes the senses and often offends the eye. Your inner Neanderthal will be satiated but your outer Sapien horrified. I must say the audience was somewhat transfixed by the action as almost no one withdrew to the necessary room.
I enjoyed this film. Always something happening. Brutality and killing running through the aisles. A genuine feel of being frozen, starving, and in agony--what's not to like?
I will have to wait a week to see if I want to see it a second time. Once might be enough.

Thanks! for sharing-
Sounds like a sophisticated, elegant, delicate, sensitive movie,
just my kind of stuff.
...the highlight of the film - the realistic bear mauling.
I plan to see it soon.
My popcorn hand is already trembling with anticipation.

Or almost all. That would help with the beauty of photography if the scenes allowed beauty; and with the visceral impact of the action. 'Visceral' being a great word here.
It sound like the ads and trailers got it right -- not a Disney flick. Hardy can do cold brooding evil better than anyone out there.
Glad they waited until after Christmas to pop this one loose. Think I'll pass and wait for the next Aliens sequel.
