I found this movie disappointing - especially after trusting an impressive Rotten rating and gushing reviews. While religious propaganda was sprinkled in with expertise, this film rode like an X- rated (for violence) Disney movie. The characters were one-dimensional and shallow. Sure, I respected the main characters principles - but in between the lines was a off-putting message... the right to "express ones own beliefs". In this political climate I see that as a slippery slope that leads to the rewriting of evolution, the omission of science and a general intolerance for anyone outside the cookie cutter.
And compared Private Ryan - the cinematography looked totally 2nd rate.
I give it a D plus, at best. Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan are vastly superior war films without the Bible beating.

and decided not to bring it up. I felt it was a comic book version of the "horrors of war". Sure there was the severing of limbs, people getting torched by a flame throwers, but it didn't have the gritty reality of a finally produced war film. It may be that Gibson didn't want to make a statement as much as a biographical look at a true individual and his struggles and heroism.

Seems Gibson hired half or Australia's actors to be in this but it worked out. Vince Vaughan was characteristically funny--he can't help it.

The first barrcks scene showed a muscle geek walking around naked to impress everyone. Sure enough, at Fort Polk there was a fat ass who did the same thing afer supper mess. Thought he was going for a Section 8. Such things happen in the Army. (Ironically, our Drill Seargent never said a word to him.)

Yeah, it's worth going and you will appreciate the epilog with clips of the real Desmond Doss and some of the people he saved. Desmond was a one of a kind and deserved everything he got.

  And I too had that feeling...as if he didn't have quite enough money--or interest--to make the killings and butcherings as realistic as in, say, 'Saving Private Ryan'.

  But, I suspect, you see more films in a week than I see in a year. :-)
