Did you catch that out back?
..
I am a good friend with the cossack Ataman of USA and Canada, and I can assure you that he drives a Benz. :)

...that we even had Cossacks here in NA, let alone one of their Ataman. Not sure about the Benz. It must be hard to swing a cutlass from one of those. ;-)

Tens of thousands, I believe, going back to 1917 or so.For those who don't know, Ataman is an elected position, elected at the Rada.
Anyway, there is plenty of controversy about them and their role in the 20th century history, I am not a part of it, I just have fun meeting and talking to the Ataman. He is a very colorful individual.

that the role of the Ataman would have evolved over the centuries. Iirc, these were high ranking military leaders; compare to multiple star Generals in US Army. Why would they need to retain a centuries old title? Aren't the Ataman (as well as the Cossacks) obsolete?

I find all that stuff with uniforms, etc. silly, but I am not one of them, so who am I to tell them?
They are determined to preserve their identity, that goes back hundreds of years and is quite colorful. There are many good things that could be said for them, even considering all the controversy, including the pogroms they were famous for. Many of them were forced to leave their homeland, in particular, during the evacuation from Crimea, under the leadership of Vrangel, and these people are remembered warmly in Europe, where they built many roads and bridges.
Anyway, it IS a fascinating subject... there are many movies on it.
