I've always welcomed his characters into the mix of whatever movie it was.
He seemed to gain quite a lot of gravitas in his later years, but some of the early work is quite good.
Caligula in "I, Claudius". (1976) He put his unique stamp on that character.
And many, many others.

One of he greatest miniseries ever, that sparked my interest and love for history. Re-watched it again few years ago, and it was as good and powerful as I remember watching it in he 70's.
me too on I Claudius. I have the series on DVD. Several stand-out performances by a highly competent cast.
Brian Blessed as Augustus was good. While the real Augustus was a much smaller man than Blessed, he captured the power and authority of the position and became real in my mind.
