I think you will like Bollywood musicals. You can rent DVDs with subtitles on Amazon. Devdas, Dil Se, Bajirao, et al are good. Look out for actors Aiswarya Rai, Priyanka Chopra (Quantico fame) Madhuri Dixit, Sharukh, Salman. Lots of music and dance. Rent them and see.

Thanks! I do like Bollywood musicals, actually. I also like Umbrellas of Cherbourg, which was a big influence on the director of La La Land.
They were very popular in the USSR, shown all the time, so their syrupy music forever imprinted in my memory - I wish I could get rid of it.
Early on, they actually made some serious movies, especially those with Raj Kapoor.

Raj Kapoor's serious ones were very early ones. Jagte Raho, Awara, Sri420. There was also Barsaat, Andaz. Nargis was the heroine in most of them. The songs were so popular in Russia. My Ukrainian son in law can hum a few. The all time favorite song is one which Raj Kapoor sings (actually not him but a playback singer called Mukesh) which says' My shoe is Japanese, my pants are English, the red cap is Russian but the heart is Indian.' Krushchev and Bulganin while visiting India wanted to visit Kapoor studios and meet Raj Kapoor and his father Prithviraj Kapoor.
I like Jagte Raho a lot. And the songs of all the movies.

Those Indian titles throw me off, which one of them could be translated as Vagabond? I think Awaara?
Edits: 03/16/17
Yes, Vagabond is Awaara. Sri 420 is also a vagabond who could be booked as per Section 420 of the Criminal Act. In general Raj Kapoor was imitating Charlie Chaplin. Stalin's successors thought since they could not show pictures of CC, they would show an imitation. The entertainment deprived Russian masses fell for it. The songs had catchy tunes which I am unable to deprogram.

There is that strange special feel - watching something that you remember from over 60 years ago... :)
I liked it, and did not find the music too much or irritating, the main story is strong enough and songs limited - unlike in the later Indian films, where they tend to dominate weak story line.
Will try to locate some other films that you recommended - thank you!

I saw an old movie Hum Dono (We Two) again after 50 years, on Youtube. I was shattered with nostalgic sorrow. It is a very good movie, not too many songs but a few good ones, good acting, good story but sad.
Best Wishes

Where do you get these?

Only in Hindi.
But by clicking on other Youtube suggestions, we cam across the other marvel we did not see before: Visconti's The Witches with Silvana Mangano.

Sorry you couldnt find subtitled ones. Good you could run into Silvano Mangano.
Hindi is the language of the North and we in the south did not understand the conversation of Hindi Movies. We guessed from the gestures and the body language. But we could learn the songs. I sang the songs at some functions without knowing what I was saying! I still dont know the whole meaning.
There are many Hindi movies for sale or rent at Amazon.
Best Wishes
Bill
