With nice zero-gravity effects and decent CGI, this film is mostly entertaining and somewhat compelling. It's a newly-twisted tale of "horror in space with no where else to run" plot. Our crew members intercept a lander from Mars and find a cutesy single cell organism that intrigues and beguiles the eager scientific minds studying it. It is given the name "Calvin" by earth kids and everybody is tickled pink.
Unfortunately, Calvin starts to grow a bit with the oxygen atmosphere and suddenly turns aggressive. Before you know it, Calvin is terrorizing the place by attacking crew members to get its nutrition and growing at an alarming rate. Panic ensues and it doesn't look good for the survivors or Planet Earth.
Well crafted with good effects this is a good way to kill some time in the dark. When the action picks up you will feel a sense of tension for the crew as Calvin does what he can to put them all on the menu. Boy, can he move fast, too. The action comes to a close when the last two survivors decide to propel Calvin into deep space so's not to endanger earth.
This is a high voltage cast put to good use that will draw international audiences from everywhere. (That's the point, right?) Space films are pretty much limited in what can happen. This one takes a different road in order to keep your rapt attention. If you like your outerspace horror, you can have your outerspace horror with this one.
Follow Ups:
I saw it on Saturday.
It was entertaining and had a few good moments, but is burdened with several fairly gaping flaws in logic - if you care about that stuff .....
Cheers,

Dont know why they always make aliens very big. A small R2D2 size strong violent alien would be more interesting or at the most a Chewbaca size.
Cheers

...is this really different enough to warrant 2 more hours of watching a hungry creature hunt down human meals in confined quarters?
in your case, maybe not. There's always the boober tuber.
