In Reply to: RE: 'JACO' documentary on Jaco Pastorius, a treasure trove of interviews and information from the best jazz musicians posted by PhilJ on October 11, 2017 at 20:34:31
I agree, it was a informative, balanced documentary that was really well done. So many music documentaries over-celebrate and they border on propaganda - but not 'Jaco".I saw Weather Report twice and the Jaco project "Word of Mouth" in a small-ish venue.
In the Word of Mouth group (at least at the gig I saw) Jaco's manic energy was almost was distracting to the music, but he was still amazing. The first Weather Report show was perfection. Unforgettably beautiful and the music was prioritized over showboating. Jaco's voice was always brilliant.
Have a great day -Jim

same guy as when he was with Weather Report - understandably but still not my choice of music, kind of a hyper world music sound (if that makes sense)
Phil - I guess I'm just "old" ha ha - nothing to be jealous about!
I totally understand the "few years" back reference. It's amazing how quickly time flies, especially when a concert is etched in ones mind.
I saw the Mahavishnu Orchestra Birds of Fire tour when I was in High School and that was over 40 years ago. I can still see McLaughlin clear as a bell... like it was yesterday.
Although Jaco's genius isn't present, I like the Alphonse Mouzon era of Weather Report too. Particularly Alphonse's bass line on Cucumber Slumber- it's an inventive lyrical hook I never tire of.
To me, on some Fusion stuff- the production and keyboard sounds don't age well, but it's still great music.
Have a great day- Jim

Very close, but the Bass player was Alphonso Johnson on Cucumber Slumber. Alphonse Mouzon was the Drummer on Weather Reports first album in 1971.
Not sure what a "few" years means, Joe Zawinul has been dead for ten years. The Zawinul Syndicate did have a world music flavor to it not sure if I would use the word "hyper" to describe it. The Syndicate was similar in sound to Weather Report but with a more ethnic bend to it. There were also many variations to the actual group.
I have heard many of the Zawinul albums my favorites being: The Rise & Fall of the Third Stream and Zawinul. The show in Detroit (which I admittedly only caught the 2nd half) was very fast paced, probably Zawinul pushing the bar once again.
I did not mean to disparage him in any way.
