I could not put my finger on who played Clementine Churchill now I read it is Kristin Scott Thomas she is good here and looks great
Follow Ups:
I just saw the movie a couple of days ago, with a question and answer after with the lead actor.
While I had heard of the actor, I didn't know the face or connect the work, , and was surprised the guy was not old, like in the movie.
He said only one make up man would do ,or no picture for him , and dragged him out of retirement. Said they cut back the original mask, so made a "look" that only suggested Churchill, yet let his expressions come through. Said it was very detailed , because, unlike a creature makeup, with people, every hair must be the same , the details must match exactly.
Said it took four hours to put on, two to take off, so the days were long. He started his day about 130 AM and ended about 11Pm, for twenty-eight days. Said he went to the piano to get the vocal range to stay in, and immersed himself in the man. Said the saving grace was Churchill was good company, as preparations were about two years. Said his wife went to bed with the english prime minister and woke up with a commoner.
SAid the key was doing the work, learning the script at the kitchen table until he could do any scene at any time, if needed, on the spot. Mentioned the difficulty in telephone acting, who was good, and how the scene was set because they didn't have the money to shoot FDR in the conversation, so the scene was cut down and would up as a phone call with him carrying the scene alone.
SAid his most challenging roles were the ones where he has a character who doesn't do much, like commissioner Gordon in the batman series. Said it was hard to develop a character who only says , I need men on the roof, now, ! and then fades away, stuff like that.
He returned often to the theme of hard work as his main tool for success, and was a skilled public speaker, making the time go by with interesting comments on the side, keeping people very engaged.
Hi,
One thing that prevented me from giving the Darkest Hour a full star review was a show that aired in the 60's on TV which I video taped in the 80's. It was a weekly series called Churchill, The Valiant Years.
This show had all his great speeches, outstanding music, and Gary Merrill and Richard Burton lending their voices. It's a hard act to follow if you love history.
Another guy said it might of been too short. He was right on. As voted the most important man in the 20th century you do really need more to show and this could never be done in a 2 hour movie.
Do go and see it or rent it. This is just my opinion...thanks Mark K.
Congrats! Mr. Oldman.
Phil, Churchill hated Holy Cows, Indians and Gandhi in particular (he called Gandhi "half naked Fakir" at the Round Table Conference)

Oldman never turns in a poor performance.
KST has never looked bad, IMO.
Hmmm--I felt it rambled far too long--some good inspiring bits--the Undergound trip /etc
but bit much padding--
I preferred the earlier Brian Cox version--his tete de tete with Ike and Monty etc was scenery
chewing stuff
Both had their moments though and worth the effort

I will look into the Brian Cox movie you mentioned...

The writing and Oldman were over compelling.

I generally only get to watch kid's films anymore. My fourteen year old wanted to go see a movie on Saturday, and not being able to find a way out of it, I suggested that we at least see something with a pretense of education. We loved it. Churchill v. Chamberlin. Still applicable today.

he should have gone to prison but mainly he let the cat out of the bag on Project Phoenix which I indirectly worked on in VN. Just more guilt to deal with.
Fascinating that you were part of the Phoenix program. Some say they are running that playbook in the U.S. today. Fusion centers and all that. Could be easily enough done with modern databases and computers. Use a targeted citizen's every encounter with the govt. to screw with them.
Carry on.
BTW, I thought Darkest Hour was very good.
Big speakers and little amps blew my mind!
I wonder if King George really came to Winnie's spare bedroom and had a chat? Nice touch.

Some ask why Mendelsohn played King George. Well, if the light strikes him just right he has some decent George features.
I don't think WSC needed to find out what the British people felt.
I think he just knew.
Don't forget, there was now a national unity gov't, he knew alright.

"E Burres Stigano?"
very, very good.
Accurate, too!
It was very clever to send that fascist shit Halifax to Washington as Ambassador.
