...who will win?
Follow Ups:

...did you wake up this morning wishing it was 1950 again?
Spoiler alert: it already won.
I saw Three Billboards twice. Even better the second time around.
Darkest Hour was a superb performance, but just a "good" movie.
Shape of Water was beautiful and entertaining ...but not due to acting. Just fun Sci-Fi.
The Post ...they did their best to buy an award, maybe they will have purchased one.
Just my 2-cents ...and I am quite certain I take this stuff far less seriously than most of you folks.
Dean.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
...3 Billboards is the front runner.
I'd like to see Shape of Water win.
I have only seen a couple of the contenders, so don't have choices. I was surprised the Post was so heavily ignored considering the good comments I have seen.

that Sally Hawkings should get a hot date with Oscar. She is unbelievable. Meryl couldn't do that.
Never thought I'd see Sally in the buff but she looks exactly as you might imagine.
5 wonks for Sally and film.
...While at some level it's quite well done, it's also kinda sci-fi and presents situations that some find...ahhh....troubling? I suspect it will get awards only for the obscure stuff if it gets any at all.
YMMV
....Science fiction rarely gets an Oscar for best picture or director. YMMV
But it will win for both. Not sure I would call this science fiction as much as I would call it a fairy tale/fantasy movie. Lord of the Rings Return of the King pretty much swept the Oscars. It happens
...because some religious organizations have found certain aspects of it offensive. OTOH, maybe the academy will reward it because some religious organizations find certain aspects of it offensive. That'll show 'em!
For the record, I liked it and may go see it again, esp if it does win something more than best art direction.
rarely agree. I don't think it's going to be an issue. Certainly hasn't been so far.
You can say that again.
I have little respect for people who insist they know better than myself how my life should be lived, since they never consult me. And I don't think they have enough moral power to consult god about anything, without walking away with severe lightening burns from a gracious power.
I suspect The shape of water will win best picture and a lot of other trophies. I am hoping for Get Out to win a few but I suspect it's too soon for Jordan Peele.
I will say this. Get Out is the movie that will stand the test of time among this group and Jordan is on his way to being the next Stanley Kubrick.
Yes I am biased. But I called this one two years ago. Not the nominations but the excellence of the movie itself.
Told ya The Post wouldn't do well.
...Best Actress nominations isn't too bad.
Of course not. And it is well deserved to be sure. But she won't win
I couldn't take it seriously, but that's me.
And yet Get Out was extremely original in as much as any film can be original
I found it sleep-inducing. The Big Sick, otoh, was full of life and "truthiness."
Nt
But only a few seemed to have not gotten Get Out. Doesn't make you a bad person though.
Nt
I highly recommend watching it again but read up on it first. You don't have to worry about spoilers now. In fact I would suggest giving Get Out a second watch with the director's commentary.
About the few numbers of women. It seems the PC police want to turn all the awards into quota system not a merit system. Every year some group is catawalling about being snubbed or left out.
Let's take Dunkirks nominations and spread them around to the cause du jour.
Just ignore those idiots, like I do. Don't send them your money. They haven't made a decent movie in 40 years, anyway.

...there's always been hand wringing and drama.
Remember in 1973 when Sacheen Littlefeather accepted the Oscar for Marlon Brando for the Godfather because he was protesting Indian rights.
For the past couple of years, it's been about people of color being recognized.
Now it's women being discriminated against and the #MeToo movement.
White men are an oppressed minority today according to some.
I'm finally fed up with the ever-increasing use of the entertainment media for social causes and political disruption.
Let's get back to glamour and merit not handing out awards to recognize the latest cause du jour. There should be joy in celebrating the art and craft of film making not cringing through inane diatribes.
> I'm finally fed up with the ever-increasing use of the entertainment media for social causes and political disruption.>
What is the point of entertainment, art, film and even music if not to both celebrate and protest the events of current times?
And the same goes for the award shows - they reflect the issues of the day.
That's how social change comes about.
Perhaps as someone with minority views, who is easily offended, you should avoid those shows.
We liked The Shape of Water very much.... Get Out? Not so much....
Get Out was good, in a superficial kind of way ... To me, it was a combination of The Stepford Wives and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.
I avoid Hollywood films or events - that feel like a preachy homework assignment for Liberal leanings... that I probably already have. I don't read the Huffington Post or watch The Young Turks for the same reason. It feels intellectually self - indulgent to me.
If we "...celebrate and protest the events of current times..." then make a To Kill a Mockingbird (or Network or a Dr Strangelove) and I would hope that most of us would stand in line to buy a ticket - because the film was entertaining as well as socially significant.
Thanks to all who wrote in this thread- Have a great day.
Wrong. Film is a very, very loud megaphone used by the FEW to sway the multitudes. It is unrealistic and out of balance with mainstream thought. Perhaps films should have black box warnings on them or be cut differently for the east and west coasts.
Apparently that expression belongs to Yuri Olesha.

...with your minority views.I see a reflection of our culture and social issues.
Do you see the same thing from factual mainstream news broadcasts?

I can see what you mean, but doubt the other poster ever will .
Just the way the mind stores things.
Once concepts become beliefs, they are stored in a part of the brain next to religion, and any conflict with the beliefs just causes them to dig in deeper.
Facts become fake, because conflicts with the belief can't be real, only what the mind holds, is real. Even beliefs formed in error, the result is the same. Ask any person who denies climate change for an easy example.
Most I talk to about climate don't have enough understanding to discuss climate from weather, but will fight to the death for their beliefs about it.
I do not contest the value of speaking truthfully, and the need to stand up for the truth.
But, the data is very clear, you can't argue effectively using facts in these situations. You can only unwind the phenomena by trust and small bits of story over time, until truth again is seen as something good for personal growth and society, instead of something of only conditional worth , embraced if it supports held opinions, a plot out to trick you all other times.
"Our tribe is very important and must resist all outsiders" is something humans naturally do, us verses them. And people still resonate to that , it is basic survival and makes a lot of money when exploited on TV news.
However, civilization , going beyond the rule of fang and claw, requires co operation, seeing the potential good in others. Even if it requires loss of comfort to gain the reward, a thinking man will seek advantages that only cooperation brings. Some guys have power issues and will never get beyond fang and claw, constant conflict for boss. Even when surrounded on every hand with the benefits of progress.
Sorry if it sounds preachy and know it all. Trying to improve my skills, and never mean to offend.
...I agree.
I've always like the saying, "I've already made up my mind so don't confuse me with facts."
I don't think anyone has ever changed their opinion from being shown facts in a debate on the internet.
I support speaking up, as you did.
more people need to support the democratic power of the people over solutes to the power of the rich , while we still can. MY father risked his life in WW2 for good reason. I am not going to the other side.
...how many of these films have you seen?
What do you think?
