This one was a big surprise for me. Not the biggest Portman fan but this film is bigger than she is. Surrounded by an able cast, a good script, and a fresh angle, this one kept me tensed a good bit of the time.
Seems three years earlier "something" slammed into a coastal lighthouse and created a zone named the "shimmer" because of its outward appearance. Several teams were sent to explore it but never returned. Portman's hubby had been missing for a year when he mysteriously appeared home, again. Being not quite himself, he was rushed to a facility right outside the Shimmer. It was here that Portman's military and biology background compelled her to volunteer for the next incursion.
Jason Leigh, somewhat of a cold fish, lead the band of five into the shimmer where things of wonder, beauty, and great danger all presented themselves. There is action, drama, and enough pseudo-science to keep most every one satisfied. Near the end, the CGI squad just had to cut loose (as they are want to do) to give us a big show.
I think this one is a sleeper, as such. Compelling, intriguing, well acted. And, fresh.
4 wonks outta 5.
Follow Ups:
Just watched the 4K release on the Sony X940E, in 7.1 Atmos.
I liked it! Looks and sounds great! Interesting story.
Like someone else mentioned, the flashbacks don't appear to be relevant... maybe they needed fluff/filler?
...on my small screen at home. My lasting impression is that this appears to be 'good sci-fi'. And at the end of it one understands that the true meaning of the movie title is in the definition of the word. Recommended for anyone that likes science fiction.-Steve

Some of it is plausible in a scifi kind of way, but mixed with some pseudo science to keep it going. I was thinking that something similar could be possible caused by radiation from a solar flare or maybe some virus causing mutations. The film tickled the imagination. Reminded me of the original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and the original "The Thing".

I always enjoy a sci fi film with an open ending, the famous last scene that raises questions. A winning tradition that is not forgotten here.
There were a few forced scenes to drive the story, at my theatre a few laughs were generated when the lead character , of course, went exploring in the only dark space alien hole within miles, and it didn't go real well, of course.
I enjoyed the movie, so much so I got over my grudge whenever Natalie Portman , a prototype tiny little actor , is cast as an action lead bad ass. I'll take story over super hero punch outs every time.
My condolences to the guy who can't handle women as actors. Gives me a reason to count my blessings, plus , having seen the movie, I get the explanation that he never will. There were more subtle touches than howling blunders, I thought it a good space invader movie, and as a fan of the genre, I have seen some real stupid stuff, and still enjoyed the shows. This is not one of those. It could be a movie about pro creation instead of annihilation, some characters have a lot of drive.
There were plenty of bad reviews about Annihilation and that confuses me- Why will a flick like Black Panther or Wonder Woman get rave reviews - when Annihilation gets pummeled with dissatisfaction and anger?
Annihilation reminded me of Soderbergh's version of Solaris with some John Carpenter's The Thing thrown in for good measure (though the special effects in Annihilation paled comparatively).
The performances were all curiously played with a restrained monotone - but I found this riveting and it created tension (some might complain it was boring) Me? I felt like I was reacting for the main players, despite their colorless emotional breadth.
Was Annihilation about death, reincarnation, marriage ...??? I honestly don't know. But that's okay. I thought about Annihilation numerous times afterwards - it captured my imagination... and that's more then I can say, after watching 99% of what's being spit out on a Hollywood conveyor belt these days.Have a great day!

the flashbacks seemed to serve no purpose...
it was a neat story but I did not care about anyone in it
overall I give it a C+
It looks interesting and I am glad it is not a waste of time like so many of the recent Sci Fi and comic book films.

I saw the promo pic of the five protagonists in combat gear with assault rifles.... all five of them women and said, 'forget it'.
Done with this nonsense. DONE.

Israeli women military? Do not mess wit'.
or a shallow thinker.
I didn't even know there was a feminist category in science fiction. Perhaps an invention of convenience.
Personally, I would have to see it in use beyond one individual complainer. I haven't been to every bookstore, but the ones I have hit, never used that as a category. When one invents categories of feminism to hate on, that says something.
Haters have needs ,believe me. I go on the web to fix my corvette, a car favored by the socially insecure or the short penis types, sometimes both, so I read a lot of stuff about guns, hate of the unknown by the ignorant and other signs of corvette ownership.
Of course, without a discussion of the guys motives, I can't say I have any understanding of his positions, so can't criticize, to be fair. But some things are very common. Like me, a guy on the internet complaining about others, almost to the point of rudeness
...Alien?
Set the bar kinda high.

and the book was considered "unfilmable" like so many other films of its genre.
I read the novel recently. I have no idea how this subjective interior account by the biologist can become a movie...i will give it a go, especially if vandermeer himself worked on the screenplay, but I expect a different type of experience, maybe not better or worse but certainly much different.
So if it was five guys in combat gear with assault rifles you'd be OK with it?

It's ALL THINGS:
Ghostbusters is male bashing
Star Trek Discovery is all female & Minority (white men are gay or evil)
Road Warrior is 'Furiosa Warrior'
Star Wars is blatant feminist man-hating propaganda
Westworld, again all hero's are female & minority
Dark Matter
The Expanse
And on and on and on forever, apparently. So no, it's not ONE MOVIE. But one more? No, I'm done with this shit.

I'm wondering if it were only a % of women in any size group would he be less DONE?
Or if there had only been ONE guy in the group of five it might have been no big deal?

Unlike many/most stateside releases. I would not say it's entirely successful as a film, but well done and generally well acted Sci-Fier which poses interesting questions, which are not always overtly answered.
Viz. Black Panther, another fantasy outing, but despite some feel-good moments and black folks in the key roles and driver's seat (director), eventually devolves to Marvel-world with people flying like nine-pins in gratuitous "fight" scenes.
All depends what one is looking for.
Wife and I saw today. Somewhat disappointed but not terrible.
